This house was built in the early 1700s by the Uniacke family as their town house. They had a big mansion up at Mount Uniacke but they also had this town house, built on the side of the old convent which was in the Coach House , also called the Old Imperial Hotel. Now when they moved the nuns away from the Coach House they also moved the graveyard beside it. I think the last nun buried there must have been forgotten when they were moving the bodies because she remains to this day wandering around the graveyard of the convent. No one ever wants to be the last body in a graveyard - the last person to be buried in a grave yard is always the “caretaker”, that person’s spirit has to remain on earth, in the graveyard to mind the graveyard until another body is buried , until the next funeral and then the caretaker can REST IN PEACE and a new caretaker takes over. The old people believed that whoever was buried last in the graveyard had to wait around until the next funeral came along. And that might not be for days, weeks, months even years sometimes. The dead person had to, if you like, mind the graveyard until the next body came along. – but now the graveyard is this beautiful house and a private family home. And there is no one to take her place. The strange thing is nearly all of the family have experienced the ghost in this house. She is never threatening, nothing harmful, just calming and prayerful. The way all ghosts should be… Let us let them all rest in peace.
