Success
Remains of the granaries can be seen along Catherine Street. These were filled with grain to be exported to England. Britain was constantly at war during the 19th century. The army and the navy had to be fed. When the Government decided that too many people were dying and that food had to be given to people, they did not use these granaries. Instead, the imported maize which people were not used to eating. In many cases, they did not know how to even cook maize which created stomach upsets for people.
