Remote working hubs in Galway get €500k investment

Over €500k of a multi-million euro investment in broadband infrastructure has been allocated to multiple townlands and projects across Galway.

The funding comes as part of the governments' Connected Hubs scheme, which aims to create more opportunities for remote work in rural areas and improve existing facilities.

€239,000 has been put aside for the development of 8 Broadband Connection Points in Co. Galway, including two in Inis Oirr and Inisbofin.

Meanwhile, hubs in Milltown, Lettermullen, Glenmaddy, Lackagh, Ballyglunin, Tuam, Clonberne, Ballinasloe, Inis Oirr, Inisbofin, GMIT, and Ceantar na nOilean Innovation in Connemara will receive additional funding to improve hotdesk capacity, create modular offices and conference rooms, and perform upgrades to audiovisual and security systems.

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, announced the allocation of funds last Thursday.

She said "Our Rural Future recognises hubs as ideal locations for people to work remotely, as well as acting as key economic assets for towns and villages.

"The increased shift to remote working as a result of the pandemic has provided a golden opportunity for a greater regional distribution of jobs to support a better work-life balance for many people."

The expansion of the Connected Hubs scheme means a total of €8.8 million will be distributed to 117 projects across the country.

A new online platform has also been launched to help people connect with Ireland's 380 hubs. It includes a comprehensive list of remote working facilities and enterprise centres, a booking system, and tools for hub managers to promote their location. See connectedhubs.ie for more.

Speaking on the impact this funding will have for communities, Minister Humphreys said:

"The investment announced today will provide an increased number of families and individuals with the option to live and work in our rural communities. Remote working from hubs and Broadband Connection Points benefitting from this funding will also support local economies and assist in reducing our carbon emissions."
