Success
This year, National Heritage Week will run from the 14th to the 22nd of August.
Coordinated by the National Heritage Council and organised locally, the week aims to celebrate (and raise awareness of) different aspects of our history and culture. In the lead up to August, community groups and individuals from all over Ireland will create projects and events that centre around those topics.
Projects will also shine a light on Irish biodiversity and wildlife. Some of the outdoors events taking place, such as fun runs, will be donating their proceeds to local charities.
From interactive bodhrán workshops to free admission to the 1798 Rebellion Centre, there's plenty of in-person as well as online events on the agenda.
Other projects include 'An Island of Dark Skies', an online event that celebrates the wonders of 3 places in our country where the night sky isn't polluted by light. Meanwhile, a 'History of Photography in Ireland' talk, a webinar called 'Is there a doctor in your house? Researching medical ancestors,' and 'Kilkenny Boat Trips along the River Nore,' are just a few of the events on offer.
Depending on the project/event, spaces can fill up quickly so those interested in attending are advised to book their place well before the 14th of August. To browse the full (and growing) list of projects, visit www.heritageweek.ie/projects.
The National Heritage Council is encouraging anyone who is interested in running an event to register as a project organiser on their website.
Projects must be registered before the 30th of August to be considered for the National Heritage Week Award 2021.
