Local Libraries Support 'Grow it Yourself' Initiative

Libraries across the country have joined a scheme encouraging local communities to grow their own fruit and veg.

Irish non-profit Grow it Yourself (GIY) are behind the initiative which aims to provide people with the seeds, gardening advice, and recipes they need to embrace 'growing your own.'

GIY founder, Michael Kells, was inspired to start the non-profit when he encountered a bulb of garlic at his local supermarket labelled 'Product of China.' Appalled at the 5,000-mile journey this tiny vegetable had made, he set out to grow his own, and help others realise how easy it was too.

In conjunction with Healthy Ireland and Libraries Ireland, GIY has launched the Grow it Forward campaign. This initiative will see 50,000 free food-growing kits being distributed to those who register with the program. The kit includes seeds for tomatoes, beetroot, carrots, peas, and salad leaves as well as guides on how to grow them.

Joining your local library is now easier than ever — register online with the link below

With a goal of reaching half a million people across Ireland, GIY is encouraging participants to share their seeds or produce with neighbours, friends, and family.

While the GIY website registration quota for the packs has already been filled, you can still pick up a kit by calling or visiting your local library. They can also provide free access to the GIY Grow, Cook, Eat cookbook, which includes plenty of inspiration on what to rustle up with your eventual harvest.

Packs will be available from March 31st to May 14th.

Register online with your local library to get access to the growing kits, cookery books, and much more!
