New Study Reveals The Cancer-Fighting Component of Green Tea

New research into the health benefits of green tea has revealed how it might be used to fight cancer. A link has been found between one of its compounds, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and our p53 gene (which is known as a tumour-suppressor).

The p53 protein is responsible for repairing DNA damage and destroying cancerous cells in our bodies β€” the more we have of it and the better it functions, the less likely we are to develop cancer. Researchers have discovered that EGCG can increase the level of p53 in our bodies, ensuring it remains activated and prevents cancer-causing cell mutations.

It's hoped that the new-found interaction can be imitated in a drug that treats or prevents cancer in the future.

The Story of an Irish Teenage Carer Who Goes Above and Beyond For His Family

17-year-old Monaghan teenager Sean has a busier home life than many his age. His older sister Kathryn was born with a chromosomal disorder which has limited her intellectual development and caused her to be non-verbal. Sean has been one of her carers since he was a boy, looking after her when his mom was busy and calming her when she became frustrated and aggressive.

Sean is one of many teenage carers across the country who go above and beyond for their families during difficult times. Here's the full story.

Texas Supermarket Lets Shoppers Leave With Free Groceries After Power Outage

A supermarket allowed its queueing customers to leave without paying for their trolleys of food last Tuesday, following the devastating big freeze and power cuts that took place in Texas, U.S. When the lights went out in the 'H.E.B' grocery store, shoppers feared the worst β€” until the queues started moving, they reached the till and the cashier waved them through. It's one of many kind gestures performed by civilians across the state last week and a reminder of how people support each other in times of crisis.
