The number of people being vaccinated in the UK has exceeded that of reported new cases in the past week. On Sunday, the BBC reported that according to the NHS chief executive, vaccines were being administered at 4 times the rate of newly detected cases. He added that on average, 140 people per minute were receiving their first dose of two. The news bodes well for the UK's plan to vaccinate a large portion of its population by September 2021.
47-year-old Mandy Finlay has walked one million steps to raise funds for the Lakers Social and Recreational Centre based in her town of Bray, Co. Wicklow. The centre services over 400 users with intellectual disabilities, including Mandy herself, who have had to receive online classes since last March.
In October 2018, a fire destroyed a number of the centre's transport vehicles and function rooms, forcing their facilitators and users to move into different premises. Through her walking and determination, Mandy has now managed to raise €6000 in funds for the invaluable Wicklow centre.
In wholesome news, a 2-year-old English cat that disappeared from his home in Bournemouth before Christmas was discovered this week after surfacing in the town where he was born. Owners of the ginger tomcat, Cupid, were stunned to find out that he had made a 38km journey from his coastal hometown to the small inland village of Odstock, Wiltshire.
The woman who found Cupid had lived two doors up from him when he was a kitten. Not recognising the cat, she posted an appeal on social media to find his owners, which luckily allowed his Bournemouth owner to get in touch and bring him home.
