Castlerea is Now Live on The Xplore Platform!

We are delighted to welcome the town of Castlerea to the Xplore Local platform!

Congratulations to the Castlerea Town Team who launched the app at the wonderful Trinity Arts Centre today. It was great to see such an excellent turnout!

For those who aren't familiar with the area, here's a little bit about the town:

Castlerea is a market town located along the banks of the River Suck in Co. Roscommon. It is the county's third-largest town with a vibrant population of around 2,000.

Castlerea's stunning Demense

The town has plenty of unique attractions and amenities. The Demense is popular with locals for its nature trails and fairy village. There is an outdoor swimming pool which is open to the public and a fantastic Railway Museum full of artefacts. Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, located in the nearby village of Tulsk, provides access to an incredible 240 archaeological sites.

Speaking of, Castlerea is a small town with an impressive history:

• Clonalis House, which is located a short distance from the town, is the ancestral home of the Clan O'Conor, the last of the High Kings of Ireland.
• Sergeant James King of the Royal Irish Constabulary was shot dead on Patrick St, Castlerea, on 11 July 1921. He became the last casualty of the Irish War of Independence; the Truce of July 1921 was announced later that day.
• The first president of Ireland, Douglas Hyde, was born at Longford House (a five-minute drive from Castlerea).
• The town is famous for its connection to Cindy the elephant, a circus animal who walked into a local bar in 1963.
