<p>FIRST OF ALL, Halloween has to be the greatest festival of them all. And, (drum roll please) Ireland actually invented it. But what's it all about? The celebration comes from the Celtic festival of Samhain, known as Halloween since Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saint's Day, a time to honour the dead, so October 31 became All Saints' Eve, or Halloween for short.</p>
<p>It's no coincidence Pope Gregory chose that date. According to Celtic lore, November 1st is when the sun and the stars align just so, allowing a portal to open up between dimensions so the dead can return to Earth. We disguise ourselves with masks to trick the Spirits or Faries or Sidhs into thinking we're one of them so they won't drag us back to their realm. Doesn't that sound like gut-wrenching, blood-curdling fun? To get you fired up for the Halloween festivities, here's a selection of events taking place in Tralee this Samhain.</p>

<p><strong>Siamsa Tíre </strong>is an absolute must this Halloween. You get an authentic, traditional take on Samhain, and you get see the Town Park in all its autumnal glory while your there<strong>. The Samhain Festival 2021</strong> kicks off during mid-term with a spookilicious program packed with family-friendly fun. From Mon 25th to Sat 30th, Siamsa will host a mix of theatre, arts &amp; crafts workshops and storytelling with Eddie Lenihan (pictured above), one of the few remaining traditional seanchaithe in Ireland; audiences will be spellbound by the way he weaves a tale. There's also a children’s art exhibition thrown in for good measure. <p>Nobody does festivities better than <strong>Ballyseedy Home &amp; Garden Centre. </strong>No matter what the occasion, these folks really go for it. Their Halloween festival begins on October 23rd so pop in for pop-up activities like jack-o-lantern carving, sustainable arts &amp; crafts and pottery classes. Tickets can be purchased at the <a href="http://ballyseedy.eventbrite.com" target="_self">Ballyseedy website</a>. All events are suitable for children aged 8 and upwards. Expect lots of pumpkins.</p>

<h4>ECO FRIENDLY WITH A SPOOKY EDGE</h4>
<p>Want to stomp around crunching leaves in the crisp autumn air? Of course you do. This Halloween, blow away the cobwebs at the <strong>Tralee Bay Wetlands Eco &amp; Activity Park</strong> as it hosts some brilliant activities, including an exciting Pumpkin Scavenger  Hunt. Places are set to go quickly so book early. A guided nature trail around the Wetlands reveals the spooky creatures that might be lurking beneath the murky waters, while the Scavenger Hunt leads families to the pumpkin patch where you get to choose your own pumpkin to take home and carve. <h4>KID'S HALLOWEEN FANCY DRESS DISCO</h4>
<p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Littlerosebudspamperparlor" target="_self"><strong>Little Rosebuds Pamper Parlour</strong></a> is hosting a Fancy Dress Disc o on Sunday, 31st October at 1pm. As part of the fun, kids will get a little Halloween Tattoo (temp, naturally), some Halloween treats, extra fun and games and there's a prize for best dressed. Best of all, there's a disco so all the despicable witches and warlocks can shake off that excess Halloween energy while they dance and prance and hop and skip around, casting spells to their heart's delight. <h4>FUN ON THE FARM</h4>
<p>Round up your goblins and head down to <strong>Sandy Feet Farm</strong> for a HALLOWEEN HOEDOWN. This is a FAMILY FRIENDLY event suitable for all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult and all adults must be accompanied by a child to attend. Their friendly Halloween characters will keep everyone entertained with an interactive story, singing and dancing and more. There will be some animals on the farm and the playground and sensory garden will also be open. Costumes are encouraged but not necessary.
