Anyone who remembers the movie Fame will understand: as Irish kids in the eighties, nothing was more glamorous than the New York Academy for the Preforming Arts. A school where the kids didn't even look like kids, they looked like world-weary adults, all toned and muscular and effortlessly cool in headbands and ripped leotards? Yes please. We were hopelessly hooked. Alas, all we could do was pull a pair of leg-warmers over our school socks and hope Sister Mary Patrick didn't catch us cartwheeling in assembly.&nbsp;

<h2>Your Chance to Dance</h2>
If you were once a fan of Fame and have kids of your own now, you'll like this; we have our very own Fame right here in Kerry: Siamsa Tíre's National Folk Training Academy, a stalwart of Folk Theatre training in Ireland. More culturally focused and less avant-garde than Fame (possibly), their unique three-year program teaches students Irish music, singing, reels, jigs, and hornpipes and generally offers a thorough immersion in all the traditional disciplines. This is Fame, Irish style. Tralee man, broadcaster and journalist, John Drummey, is a graduate from the program and has nothing but good things t say abut it:
“It gave me a love of the stage, music, and performance and I enjoyed it so much that it influenced who I am today, someone who works in broadcasting and journalism and who still retains a love of and involvement in Siamsa, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland.”

Right now, the Academy is auditioning for new candidates for their training programme so if you know an enthusiastic, talented youngster aged between 7 and 12, take note: this year’s auditions will be via online submissions and parents are asked to record their children singing a song or performing a piece of music or Irish dance.
