We have both student and self catering apartments available for holiday rental all year round. All the apartments are tastefully designed to ensure a warm and comfortable atmosphere throughout. Spacious and elegant, they are furnished to a standard to make living away from home more convenient, stress free and effortless. 

The student apartment consists of one double room and three single rooms whereas the self catering apartment consists of two double rooms and two single rooms and a dishwasher is also supplied in this apartment. The student apartment can sleep a maximum of five people whereas the self catering apartment can sleep a maximum of six people. All bedrooms are en-suite, be it the student apartment or the self catering apartment. All bed linen and towels are provided free of charge on arrival. 

To make your stay as comfortable as possible all the units are fully furnished with kitchen utensils and comfortable living and dining areas. Facilities include: Gold Shield Electric Storage Heating, Electric Hob and Oven, Microwave, Fridge, Dishwasher (Superior Apartment), Multi Channel TV, DVD Player (Superior Apartment) – on request, Iron and Ironing Board, Laundry facilities are available onsite at an additional charge. There is free private car parking provided for each guest. Free wireless internet is also provided in every apartment. Cots and highchairs are provided on request. Camp beds can be purchased for an additional charge of €10.00. Only one camp bed can be issued to an apartment due to Health and Safety legislation.

In the heart of Europe many years ago a group of courageous students stood up against the darkness of oppression. Their bravery on november17th, 1939, marked a pivotal moment in history, leading to the establishment of international students' day commemorated worldwide, celebrates not just their sacrifice but also the vibrant diversity, resilience, and unity of students' community across the globe. 

In a quaint town student from around the world celebrate international students' day. Among them were Mia from Italy passionate about art and history and Ken from Kenya a budding software engineer. 

The day began with a shared breakfast. Mia brought homemade tiramisu and Ken shared aromatic Kenyan tea. They exchanged stories of their homelands, finding joy in their differences and similarities. As the day progressed, they joined a seminar discussing the historical significance of the day learning about the bravery of students in 1939 in Prague. This deepened their appreciation for the freedom, opportunities they enjoyed as international students. In the afternoon a cultural fair unfolded. Mia showcased a vibrant display of Italian renaissance art while Ken demonstrated a program, he had coded to translate phrases to different languages. Their peers hailing from multiple countries, contributed their unique talents and knowledge creating a rich mosaic of global culture. 

As dusk approached the students gathered for a music and dance event Mia taught Ken the tarantelle a lively Italian dance. While Ken taught Mia some traditional Kenyan dances. Music from around the world filled the air and laughter echoed through the campus. 

The day ended with a reflective moment. The students lit candles forming a circle of light symbolizing their unity and shared commitment to making the world a better place through understanding and collaboration.  

Mia and Ken along with their friends left the celebration feeling more connected than ever, not just to their own cultures but each other's international student's day had brought them closer turning classmates into a global family.  

This short story captures the essence of international students' day, a celebration of cultural diversity, historical awareness and the unifying power of education. 

Years later Mia and Ken were now successful in their own fields. Returned to the university they found their mural preserved. A symbol of a tradition that continued to thrive. Every year on international students' day new students added to the mural weaving their stories into the ever-evolving masterpiece. Mia and Ken, standing before their legacy, realized that the true impact of their journey was not in the mural itself but the unbreakable bonds and understanding it fostered among generations of students.

A Day of Unity - International Students' Day 

Have you ever wondered why some people deviate from the diet we've all been taught since childhood? It all comes down to self-introspection.

Self-introspection, often referred to as self-reflection, is the process of examining one's own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It involves deep self-examination and a conscious effort to gain insight into one's motivations, beliefs, and actions. It is well-studied and proven that self-introspection helps with:

If we stop to think about the things we do just because we were taught that way, we can discover parts of ourselves that may surprise us.

So, I'll ask you another question to make you think about yourself, why do you eat meat? Since we were children, we've been given products that come from animals, but have you really asked yourself why? Have you asked yourself the consequences that this industry has?

Today, on November 1st, for World Vegan Day, we will answer these questions.

Why do we consume products that come from animals?

In the past, it was necessary to eat what was available at the time. Over time and with the evolution of the human species, we were led to believe that this is the correct and normal thing to do. Capitalism and speciesism have made us believe that we are not a part of this industry that is gradually destroying our world.

Consequences of consuming animal products

Thousands of studies have affirmed all these consequences of this diet that we have been taught as normal. Some of these consequences are:

Environmental Impact: The meat and dairy industry is a major contributor to environmental degradation. Deforestation, habitat loss, and high greenhouse gas emissions are associated with livestock farming.

Global Food Insecurity: The inefficiency of producing meat compared to plant-based foods contributes to global food scarcity. It takes a significant amount of resources, including water and grains, to produce a small amount of meat, which could otherwise be used to feed more people with plant-based alternatives.

Animal Welfare: We have been led to believe that humans are superior to any other species, belittling and killing the others. All animals deserve to be respected, like humans, are sentient beings and unique with a nervous system to capture the emotions and situations that surround them. We do not have the right to make them be born into a world where their only purpose will be to die for human consumption.

Health Implications: Consuming animal products has been linked to various health issues, including heart disease, high cholesterol, and an increased risk of certain cancers. On the other hand, a plant-based diet has been shown to promote better health and reduce the risk of these diseases.

If you want to support this cause to respect the world in which you live, every little decision matters.

The seemingly harmless act that we all do of buying a steak has created this industry that will never stop if it continues to have customers, every unit of it purchased is more money and incentive for the company to continue producing, and the same market where you buy will continue to get these products.

Ah, the debate about when Spring begins. For centuries, this has been a debate in Ireland, with both sides passionately making their case. On the one hand, there is the Celtic tradition that Spring starts in February, and on the other there is the popular belief that Spring begins in March. So, which is it? Let’s take a look at both sides of the argument and try to come up with an answer.

The most traditional view is that Spring begins in February. According to Celtic lore and mythology, the start of Spring was celebrated on Imbolc. Imbolc, the festival marking the beginning of spring has been celebrated since ancient times. It is a midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, a Cross Quarter Day, and can fall between the 2nd & 7th of February, this year it’s Febrauay 5th. The Celts believed that this was the time of year when the earth began to wake up from its winter sleep and the days started to get longer and warmer.

The Celts celebrated this time of year with rituals such as lighting bonfires and feasting. In Ireland, this festival is still celebrated today and is known as Imbolc. It is a time for reflection and renewal, focusing on the coming of Spring and the promise of new life.

The other popular belief is that Spring begins in March. This argument is mainly based on the astronomical definition of the start of Spring, which is closely linked to the vernal equinox. The vernal equinox is the moment when the sun is directly above the equator, and this usually happens around the 20th of March each year.

This date is also significant for meteorologists, who use the vernal equinox as the point at which Spring is said to begin. It is based on the fact that, on this day, the amount of daylight and darkness is equal, and the days start to become longer than the nights. This is why many people believe that the start of Spring should be in March.

So, where does that leave us? It’s clear that there is a strong argument for both sides, and it seems that the debate will continue for some time. Of course, the reality is that Spring doesn’t begin on a single day, but is a gradual process that takes place over a period of weeks and months.

Small Successes for Settling into the New Year

Were you there? Were you one of the hundreds of families milling around, soaking up the atmosphere of the Christmas Market at the Island of Geese last Friday and Saturday night? What a resounding success and something that’s sure to become a Christmas tradition for Tralee going forward. 

We had seasonal singing from the choirs of Presentation SC, Scoil Eoin and Listellick NS and performances by the brilliant members of the Kerry Choral Union and the Oliver Hurley Stage School Choir. Not to mention the food, the drink, the crafts, the yuletide fun. Everything you need to get you into the holiday spirit. But while the Christmas Market might be over, there is still plenty of festive cheer to be had in town. 

The Elf Trail, in partnership with Cara Credit Union, will be in operation on Saturday 17th  Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th of December from 12pm to 4pm on the Saturdays and 2pm to 5pm on Friday. Explore the wooden cabins of four of Santa’s elves located in Russell Street, The Square, The Mall and Castle Street and find out if you’re on Santa’s naughty list or not. And if you’re little ones have a letter for St Nicholas himself, bring it along to ‘Jingle’ at the North Pole cabin and he’ll make sure the big guy gets it. And keep a look out for that mischievous giant elf that’s been showing up all over the place. If you spot him, you could win a €1000 gift voucher and luxury hamper just in time for Christmas.

Performances of Santa Claus, The Show will resume on Saturday 17th December in The Square at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm and again on Christmas Eve at 2pm and 3.30pm. The show is light and fun and free and features many favourite musical numbers from Christmas movies.
