<p>Galway Music Residency is once again bringing the joy of live music to nursing homes across <a href="https://xploreapp.io/galway" target="_self">Galway </a>through its beloved initiative, Music in the Afternoons. This autumn, the initiative will visit three locations: Brampton Care Home, Little Flower Nursing Home, and St Brendan's. With performances lined up from the renowned Ivernia String Quartet, the Jazz Quartet, and the Galvian Way, residents are in for a series of unforgettable musical afternoons.</p>
<p>The project is designed to uplift and engage residents, providing them with enriching experiences through music. Each of the three mini-residencies will showcase a different genre of music, from classical to jazz and traditional Irish melodies.&nbsp;</p>
<p>According to Galway Music Residency, their aim is to "create magical afternoons filled with classical, jazz, and traditional music – inviting residents to sing, move, and enjoy the gift of music." The residency’s talented musicians will not only perform but also actively involve the residents, offering an interactive experience that goes beyond just listening.</p>

<p>This programme has been made possible through the support of Creative Ireland Galway County, which has partnered with Galway Music Residency to bring these performances to life.</p>

<p>In care homes, music is increasingly recognised as a valuable therapeutic tool, offering a range of emotional, cognitive, and physical benefits. For residents, especially those facing cognitive decline or isolation, music provides an accessible medium of connection, engagement, and stimulation.</p>
<p>One of the most profound effects of music in care homes is its impact on individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Alzheimer's Association, musical memories are often preserved because key brain areas linked to musical memory remain relatively unaffected by the disease.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Research shows that familiar tunes can trigger memories and feelings in individuals with dementia, even when other forms of communication may be difficult. Listening to or participating in music can reduce agitation and anxiety, providing a calming and familiar environment for residents .</p>

Additionally, residents may be encouraged to clap, tap, or move along to the rhythm, subtly promoting physical activity.</p>
