We believe that our towns have so much to offer, from their rich, buried histories to the shops that line their streets.

Sheep’s milk is naturally high in B vitamins including Folic acid and B12. It is also high in Vit A and D, Potassium and Zinc, all providing us with health benifits. The fats and proteins are also easier to digest than cows milk and it is recommended for Asthma and Eczema.

Cais na Tire cheese is manufactured onsite 2-4 times a week by Lorraine and Barry. The milk is pasteurised and cultures, lysozyme and rennet are added. After the milk coagulates, it is cut to seperate the curds and whey. The curds are placed and pressed in moulds. The cheese is placed in a brine before being dried and coated. It is stored in the ripening rooms for 6-9 months to allow the flavour to develop .

It takes 7 litres of sheep’s milk to produce 1kg of cheese compared to 11 litres of cows or goat’s milk. This is because sheep milk contains higher solids. Sheep however only produce approx. 300 litres of milk in a year compared to 5000 litres from a cow!

The name in Irish is Port Omna which translated from Irish is ìthe landing place of the "Oak Tree". The surrounding countryside can be seen to best advantage from the highest point on Slieve Aughty Mountain, 1207 feet high. The town is an important base for cruising and fishing on the Shannon.

Kerry’s photographic adventures really started when she left Ireland in 2001 with her first digital camera. 

She planned to be away for a year but didn’t quite make it back at the end of that first year. One year turned into two and before she knew it she had been away fifteen years. 

During that time she moved on from just documenting her travels, eventually became a full-time photographer in 2013 while in New Zealand. 

The last few years there were spent photographing a mix of real estate, portraits, weddings and of course the stunning landscapes.

Kerry does not shoot in a studio because it’s not what she enjoys or a style of photography that she is particularly drawn to.  

Her preference is to shoot outdoors, although she can do in-home sessions, mainly when photographing newborns and babies.  

When she photographs, she not really interested in capturing the perfect you, just the real you! 

So you don’t have to be in your best clothes or have perfect hair and makeup. If you want to, that’s fine but let’s face it, it’s Ireland….within thirty minutes you’ll probably have red cheeks from wind burn and your hair will look like a cat just slept in it but what’s not to love about that!  

Kerry aims to get natural and relaxed images that you’ll enjoy looking back on for many years to come. She is happiest when she is out and about exploring. If you’re the same, let’s get out and photograph you in some of your favourite places.

A captivating selection of Italian films are coming to Galway's EYE Cinema from April 4th-6th as part of the New Italian Cinema Events (N.I.C.E.) film festival.  It features some of Italy’s best contemporary directors, including Paolo Sorrentino, Ferzan Özpetek, and Pilar Fogliati.

This year’s selection features 10 films and 22 screenings, and is particularly dedicated to the complexities of female characters, exploring the balance between self-representation and external portrayal.

This 4th edition of the N.I.C.E Italian Film Festival takes place across four cities - Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick -  and is organised by the Embassy of Italy in Ireland and the Italian Institute of Culture,  in collaboration with UCC, University of Galway, Galway Film Society and the Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD).

“Romantiche” (Romantic girls), Pilar Fogliati's directorial debut, delves into the lives of four women navigating personal challenges and aspirations, highlighting their unique journeys toward self-discovery and belonging. 

“Diamanti” (Diamonds), directed by Ferzan Özpetek, transports viewers to a bustling tailoring shop in 1970s Rome and its 18 female employees, each bringing their own stories, dreams, and challenges.

Margherita Vicario's directorial debut, “Gloria!”, is set in the late 18th-century female institution of Sant Ignazio near Venice. It follows Teresa, a visionary musical talent, as she challenges the eras conventions by creating music that is both rebellious and modern.

The festival also brings Paolo Sorrentino’s latest film, “Parthenope”, to Ireland for the first time.  The film is a tribute to the director’s love for the city of Naples, embodied in the life of the young girl, Parthenope.

Also set in Naples, “Il treno dei bambini” (The children’s Train) by Cristina Comencini tells the story of poverty and pride in a divided Italy at the end of World War II. 

Staying in the historical genre, “L’abbaglio” (The Illusion) is set in 19th-century Sicily and follows a group of unlikely fighters who, under Garibaldi's command, are tasked with deceiving the enemies of the Bourbon army. 

The film skillfully blends historical elements with an intense narrative, offering a fascinating glimpse into crucial events that shaped Italy's unification. 

A very different theme is explored in the documentary “Real”, directed by Adele Tulli, which reflects on what it means to be human in the digital age. Through a series of thought-provoking interviews and visual storytelling, the film examines how technology, social media, and virtual realities are reshaping the way we perceive ourselves and others.

“Familia”, by Francesco Costabile, is a story about domestic violence and the attempt to rise above it. Winner of several international awards, the film blends genres, ranging from thriller to social drama.

Finally, “Una storia nera” (A Dark Story), directed by Leonardo D'Agostini, is a thriller where, after a bitter divorce, a man disappears without a trace, leaving his ex-wife and children to unravel the mystery.

All films will be screened in Italian with English subtitles. The dates and venues are:

Italian Film Festival at Galway's Eye Cinema Features Debut Irish Screening

Storyteller and musician Andrias De Staic is the MC at an exciting new night of green talks- ‘’Giob Geab’’; on Wednesday, March 26th at 8pm, in the Mick Lally Theatre, Druid Lane.

‘Giob Geab’ is an Irish interpretation of the Japanese rapid fire presentation format known as ‘Pecha Kucha’.

Community groups, Social Enterprises, Biodiversity groups, Schools, and Residents Associations are invited to present on their sustainability projects or innovative ideas to a receptive audience.

This new format (10 slides, 30 seconds each, with mainly images) is designed to make the evening as engaging and fun as possible and highlight the environmental, biodiversity and climate actions taking place in Galway city.

Galway City Council staff will also present, and the night will provide a great opportunity for networking and learning in an informal and relaxed environment.

New Sustainability MC Role For Troubadour Andrias DeStaic 

Galway's Grá Festival has declared March 21st as the inaugural International Nora Barnacle Day, commemorating the 141st birthday of one of the city's most iconic figures. 

Muse and wife of literary giant James Joyce, Nora Barnacle, was renowned for her free-spirited and passionate nature and this year's festival explores her story, her love, and her impact on Galway.

"We are declaring it Nora Barnacle Day," explains co-founder Caoimhe Lavelle. 

"She is such an icon. It is her birthday on March 21st, so we're dressing up, and we've got a whole programme of events."

The festival, which runs until March 23rd, is dedicated to love in all its forms—romantic, platonic, familial, self-love, and love for community, humanity, and the environment. 

Grá Fest is not just a celebration but also a playful and inclusive experience. 

"It's a very sex-positive festival; it's also a very playful festival. Since the very beginning, myself and Fr. Trendy have been operating as chaperones—a playful, nostalgic, romance kind of vibe; having a little bit of craic with the people."

Fr Trendy explains his role in the festival.

"Well, I'm the priest!" he says with a wink, "I'm a chaperone and as the day progresses, I get less 'chaperoney' and more involved!"

As co-director with founder Margaret Nolan, Caoimhe reflects on its origins:

"Grá Fest was founded a couple of years ago after lockdown out of a need to create a sense of community and togetherness."

Nora's life will be celebrated through music and song with readings, performances and a pop-up bookshop. An exhibition honouring Nora at the Town Hall Theatre, features works by Joe Boske, Tom Mathews, Rosie Grau and more, and is curated by Margaret Nolan. 

Other events include comedy, poetry and spoken word, history and walking tours, film, dance and workshops.

International Nora Barnacle Day Declared by Galway's Grá Fest

Galway’s Marion Bächlin-Cunningham is a vibrant force in the Irish community in Switzerland. Hailing from Fr. Burke Road, the 71-year-old is Vice President of the Basel Irish Club and founder of the Ciorcal Comhrá Irish language group in the city.

As Ireland Week Switzerland is underway in cities such as Zurich and Basel, it is an opportunity to celebrate the people who keep Irish traditions alive abroad. Marion is one such person, fostering connections between the countries through language, dance, literature, and community.

She is passionate about Irish dancing, attending classes in Basel and is an active runner, hiker and continues to enjoy travel.

Born and raised in Galway, Marion attended Claddagh Primary School and the Mercy Secondary School, both Irish-speaking. She went on to study English, French, and Mathematics at University of Galway, before undertaking her teaching qualification.

The desire to teach and explore took her far beyond the familiar shores of home. In the early 1980s, as a young mother, she took a leap of faith and moved to Algeria to teach. It was a challenging time, adjusting to life in a new country with a small child.

Despite these challenges, she adapted, and it was to become formative for her future self. It was in Algeria that she met her now husband, Michael, a Swiss national working as a project leader.

"He had spotted me before we officially met and was really curious as to who I was," she recalls with a laugh.

"We started going on little outings into the desert, and before we knew it, that was that."

Her international journey continued, taking her from Algeria to Greifensee, Zurich, then Indonesia, and eventually back to Switzerland, where she settled in Basel. She and Michael built a life together across continents, raising their three children: Saoirse, Aonghus, and Órla.

Along the way, the couple faced unimaginable tragedy in Indonesia—losing Aonghus to viral pneumonia. It was a devastating loss, but the support of friends and the expat community helped them to navigate their grief.

“There was always somebody there during the night,” she explains, “if I couldn't sleep, there was always somebody sitting there waiting for me, someone to talk to me every night.

“I was in a cloud for about two years after he died. I lost so much weight I became skeletal. But the support from our expat friends was incredible—people would take me out just to help me get through the days."

Upon their return to Switzerland, Marion would go on to teach English at FMS Basel for over two decades.

In her role with the Basel Irish Club, Marion helps to organise literature readings, dance performances, concerts, and major celebrations like St. Patrick’s Day. One of her most personal contributions has been the Ciorcal Comhrá, as she hosts the fortnightly informal Irish conversation group.

The group provides a space for Irish speakers—whether fluent or just starting out—to gather and use their ‘cúpla focal’. While attendance varies, the group has grown to 43 members on WhatsApp, with people joining from all over Switzerland.

“The interest in the Irish language is there,” Marion says.

“I set up the circle about three and a half years ago. I had asked a few Irish people if they would like to meet regularly to speak Irish, and there was a great interest there, so I started it off. We meet every two weeks.

“Not everyone can make it in person every time, but people want to stay connected.”

Ireland Week Switzerland: A Celebration of Irish Heritage

As Ireland Week Switzerland 2025 unfolds, Marion is at the heart of the festivities in Basel.

- St. Patrick’s Day Lunch at Radisson Blu, featuring live music and a fundraiser for LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

- Ciorcal Comhrá Irish Language Meet-Up (March 18) at The Bibliothek Bar.

- Finnegans Wake Reading Group (March 19) at Basel University, led by renowned scholars.

Beyond these events, Irish culture is thriving across Switzerland, with strong GAA clubs in both Zurich and Basel and an increasing number of Irish professionals working in industries like pharmaceuticals and finance.

Marion notes that while not all Irish people in Basel are formal members of the Irish Club, many turn up for big events like St. Patrick’s Day, drawn to the warmth of Irish gatherings.

Reflecting on her life, Marion sees a clear thread of connection—whether through teaching, language, or community-building, she has always sought to bring people together. She continues to do so at her beautiful lakeside home in Moycullen, where the couple spend some of their time during the year.

For the Irish in Switzerland, she is a key figure in keeping their heritage alive, ensuring that Irish culture is celebrated.

In her role with the Basel Irish Club, Marion helps to organise literature readings, dance performances, concerts, and major celebrations like St. Patrick’s Day. One of her most personal contributions has been the Ciorcal Comhrá, as she hosts the fortnightly informal Irish conversation group.
The group provides a space for Irish speakers—whether fluent or just starting out—to gather and use their ‘cúpla focal’. While attendance varies, the group has grown to 43 members on WhatsApp, with people joining from all over Switzerland.
“The interest in the Irish language is there,” Marion says.
“I set up the circle about three and a half years ago. I had asked a few Irish people if they would like to meet regularly to speak Irish, and there was a great interest there, so I started it off. We meet every two weeks.
“Not everyone can make it in person every time, but people want to stay connected.”
<h4>Ireland Week Switzerland: A Celebration of Irish Heritage</h4>
As Ireland Week Switzerland 2025 unfolds, Marion is at the heart of the festivities in Basel.
The Basel Irish Club schedule includes:

Beyond these events, Irish culture is thriving across Switzerland, with strong GAA clubs in both Zurich and Basel and an increasing number of Irish professionals working in industries like pharmaceuticals and finance.
Marion notes that while not all Irish people in Basel are formal members of the Irish Club, many turn up for big events like St. Patrick’s Day, drawn to the warmth of Irish gatherings.

The legendary Galway city St Patrick’s Day Parade takes place on Monday, March 17th starting at 11:30am.  The 'Sea and Stone' themed parade begins on University Road, crossing Salmon Weir Bridge, onto Eglinton Street, Eyre Square and Bóther na mBan, finishing at the Dyke Road car park. 

This year’s theme is a nod to Galway's stunning coastal surroundings and rich maritime heritage, featuring colourful floats, creative costumes, and plenty of surprises, as the city’s deep connection to the Atlantic is celebrated. It pays tribute to the city’s deep ties to the sea and its rugged limestone landscape. Road closures will be in place from 11am until approximately 2pm. 

National treasure and traditional Irish music superstar Sharon Shannon will be the Grand Marshal, with Fiona Ní Chéirín MC-ing the festivities in Eyre Square.

Major Milestone for Social Club Designed to Combat Loneliness

Cosy Club, a social club for women in the west, is celebrating a major milestone. Founded in 2024, it is one year since two friends, Kayte O’Malley and Sharron Lynskey, decided to create a space to combat loneliness, where women can grow their friendship circle and connect with like-minded people. Each monthly meet-up has a unique theme, ranging from painting pumpkins to pizza and prosecco nights, boujee brunches, and creating vision boards. 

Reflecting on Cosy Club’s journey, co-founder Kayte O'Malley describes how nervous she and Sharron were before their first event in March 2024:

“We were sweating bullets wondering if anyone would turn up—and if they did, would they enjoy it? We needn’t have worried; our first event was a sell-out, and we had an absolute ball.”

Since then, the club has gone from strength to strength, helping to build a community of women in the west. Kayte highlights how important it is to acknowledge loneliness, especially for younger people:

“City life can be lonely, and with so many people emigrating, it's easy to find your WhatsApp groups spanning several time zones. That’s where Cosy Club comes in—a monthly social club where people can meet up, make connections, and have the craic against the backdrop of some easy-peasy crafts and boujee brunches.”

She expresses her gratitude to everyone who has supported the club for the last year:

“A huge míle buíochas to everyone who has come along to our events, the lovely press and media who’ve helped spread the word, and all the fab Galway businesses who have hosted us over the last year. We’re excited to see where the next 12 months take us!”

After Christmas 2023, Kayte and Sharron realised that many of their close friends had emigrated, leaving them feeling the impact of long-distance friendships:

“We were feeling the pinch of our friends being scattered to the 4 winds,” she says.  

“There’s so many people in the same boat—whether it’s having pals emigrate, moving home after Covid, or working from home when you’re not in and out of an office.”

To help combat this, they launched Cosy Club, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The inclusion of crafts at each event helps create a relaxed atmosphere:

“They’re flying so far! The idea with the crafts is that it’s a nice distraction, it gives you something to do with your hands while chatting, and makes it more relaxed. The crafts are always super simple too—so no pressure to be the next Picasso!”

The club has offered a mix of creative activities, from painting pottery and candles to making Brigid’s crosses, vision boards, and potted plants.

Co-founder Sharron has stepped back this year to focus on playing GAA at club and county level. However, Kayte continues to run Cosy Club events in Galway.

“Playing at that level isn’t an opportunity everyone gets,” she says, “so I’m thrilled for her. While we used to alternate between Mayo and Galway every second month, it’s Galway only now.”

Over the past year, the Cosy Club community has flourished, and its next event is set to be a special one.

On March 9th, Cosy Club will host the Mnásome Cosy Club event at 56 Central in Galway to celebrate International Women’s Day. It will be a heart-warming and empowering gathering. Cosy Club is a welcoming space to connect, create, and enjoy a fantastic brunch.

Hosted by Kayte, every guest will leave with a handmade “Mnáwesome” greeting card featuring some of Ireland’s most inspiring women—and hopefully, a few new friends too.

Attendees will be treated to a brunch dish from 56 Central, a hot beverage (tea or coffee), an elderflower prosecco cocktail, and all the necessary craft materials. There will also be spot prizes on the day. The event kicks off with fun icebreaker games to get the conversations flowing and help everyone feel at ease.

National treasure and traditional Irish music superstar Sharon Shannon has been announced as the Grand Marshal for the 2025 Galway  St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

“We are thrilled to have Sharon Shannon as our Grand Marshal,” said Mayor Peter Keane, who chose her for the role.  

“Her immense talent, passion for Irish music, and dedication to preserving and sharing our culture worldwide make her the perfect representative for St. Patrick’s Day. We can’t wait to see her lead the parade and share in the festivities.”

Sharon Shannon is celebrated for her exceptional talent as an accordionist and her incredible contributions to Irish music. She has captivated audiences worldwide with her unique blend of traditional and contemporary sounds and is one of Ireland’s most beloved musicians and a great inspiration for all the participants in the parade.

With a career spanning 40 years, she has toured around the globe in some of the most prestigious venues, from The Kennedy Centre in Washington to London’s Wembley Arena.

Hailed as a national treasure by President Michael D Higgins, she continues to redefine the boundaries of Irish traditional music, through her collaborations with reggae, rap and classical musicians.

She has recorded and toured with Bono, Willie Nelson, Nigel Kennedy, Steve Earle, Justin Adams, Johnny Depp and the late Shane MacGowan, among many lauded artists. Sharon Shannon Announced as Galway St. Patrick's Day Parade Grand Marshal

After fiercely competitive heats, the grand final of Show Me The Funny brought a packed crowd to the Kings Head, Galway, where Ireland’s rising comedy stars battled for the top prize.

“An original pool of 60 comics was whittled down to 12,” said host and MC Gerry Mallon. 

“The standard of these new comedians is off the charts, and quite a few of them are ready to perform on the Irish and UK circuit.”

In a night filled with laughter and standout performances, Darragh Burke took home the coveted first-place prize, earning a spot on the Electric Picnic Comedy Tent line-up, along with two VIP tickets to the sold-out festival in Stradbally, Co. Laois. 

Ross O'Donoghue claimed second place and will perform at the massive All Together Now Festival in Co. Waterford this August, while Darren Gaffney, in third place, secured a slot at the renowned Galway Comedy Festival. 

Fourth place went to Alex J. Byrne, who will make his debut at The Laughter Loft, a lunchtime comedy show at the Galway International Arts Festival in July, and rounding out the top five, Jo Jarvie will take the stage at the Bray Comedy Festival next year.

The Eglinton Canal Active Travel Scheme has scooped the national prize for Best Trail/Waterway in Ireland at the All-Ireland Community and Council Awards 2025. 

The scheme has revitalised the historic canal towpath, introducing new crossings and traffic calming measures to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists. 

This transformation has turned the Eglinton Canal into a car-free city-centre trail, enhancing connectivity to key locations including Galway Cathedral, University of Galway, University Hospital Galway, the city centre, and the Spanish Arch.

Now in its 19th year, the All-Ireland Community and Council Awards celebrate the efforts of local authorities in delivering impactful projects within their communities.

Galway City Council had a strong presence at this year’s event, securing 10 shortlist nominations across a diverse range of categories. A record 311 nominations were received for the 2025 awards, highlighting the depth of competition.

Commenting on the achievement, Leonard Cleary, Chief Executive of Galway City Council, said:

“I’m delighted to see the work and dedication of staff and Elected Members of Galway City Council recognised at the All-Ireland Community and Council Awards 2025. Galway City Council had a strong presence at this year’s event, securing 10 shortlist nominations across a diverse range of categories. A record 311 nominations were received for the 2025 awards, highlighting the depth of competition.
<h4>Commenting on the achievement, Leonard Cleary, Chief Executive of Galway City Council, said:</h4>
“I’m delighted to see the work and dedication of staff and Elected Members of Galway City Council recognised at the All-Ireland Community and Council Awards 2025. Over 630 staff and 18 Elected Members work on a daily basis throughout our city to deliver services and infrastructure for the people of Galway. With 10 shortlisted projects and a win for Best Trail/Waterway in Ireland, these awards highlight Galway City Council’s strategic and community-driven approach to enhancing residents’ lives and positioning Galway as a leader in progressive, sustainable city development.”

Helping 36 million People Affected by Drought and Conflict in East Africa

Self Help Africa will host a lunch in The Kings Head Bistro on the Friday, March 7th to support the charity's work with women and families in 16 countries in Africa and the Developing World. This luncheon will begin at 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

In East Africa, 36 million people are affected by drought and conflict and are facing starvation and loss of livelihoods.

International Women's Day Lunch for Self Help Africa will be an opportunity for you to have fun, raise awareness and do some fundraising to support women and families living in some of the poorest communities in Africa. Self Help Africa works with these communities – providing women and families with the ability to produce more food, earn more from their farming activities and help mothers and fathers to provide a better life for their children.

This prestigious award recognises their commitment to fostering a vibrant, secure, and dynamic evening and night-time economy (NTE).  This marks the second time Salthill has earned this distinction while Galway City has successfully retained its Purple Flag status since 2015. 

Similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, the Purple Flag serves as a symbol of excellence, aiming to elevate the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centers between 5pm and 5am.  It highlights the rich tapestry of entertainment, dining, and culture that Salthill and Galway city offer, all while prioritising the safety and well-being of residents and visitors enjoying the NTE. 

"This achievement is a testament to the collaborative spirit that thrives in Galway," said Cllr Peter Keane, Mayor of the City of Galway.  

"It's the result of a strong partnership between businesses, An Garda Síochána, Galway City Council, and other stakeholders.  We are dedicated to creating a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone, from our youngest residents to our most seasoned visitors, and this award underscores our commitment to the continued growth and success of Galway's night-time economy."

The panel commended the development and review of CCTV provisions, the excellent availability of public toilets along the promenade, and the significant engagement of businesses with the local community to enhance the overall atmosphere of the NTE.&nbsp;
<h4>Galway city:</h4>
The panel recognised the success of initiatives like Youth Lates and Café Lates, as well as the very strong partnership fostered by the NTE Stakeholder Advisory Forum. The appointment of Galway City Council's first Night Time Economy Advisor was also noted as a significant demonstration of commitment to the Purple Flag areas and those operating within the NTE.&nbsp;
