<h3>Killarney’s Safe Street programme could be further extended until February 28.</h3>
<p>The ‘Safe Streets’ plan includes the permanent pedestrianisation of Plunkett St and Kenmare Place, the widening of several town centre footpaths resulting in the loss of about 50 car parking spaces.</p>
<p>The measures were introduced by Killarney Municipal Council in July 2020 to allow ‘social distancing’ on the town’s streets as part of an effort to reopen the town following the first COVID-19 lockdown.</p>
<p>It was further extended in September that year to allow for an anticipated strong footfall and an increase in visitor numbers before and after Christmas.</p>
<p>It was extended two more times this year, from the New Year until Easter in response to an increasing number of COVID-19 cases, and again from Easter until November to account for an anticipated busy tourist season.</p>
<p>That plan could now be extended again until February 28 and Kerry County Council is inviting members of the public to lodge comments on the proposal.</p>
<p>Submissions can be made in writing, marked ‘Road Closure’, with the Administrative Officer, Roads, Transportation and Marine Department, County Buildings, Tralee, or by email to roads@kerrycoco.ie not later than 5pm on Tuesday, October 19.<br />
