<h3>Killarney Gardai were “very happy” with the Rally of the Lakes despite thousands of people in the town for the weekend.</h3>
The rally made a welcome return after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 events.
Previous rallies were marred by anti-social behaviour issues and so-called boy racers causing traffic disruptions.
A major traffic plan was launched in the run up to the rally with Garda check points on several approach roads to the town.
A separate plan policed night time activities in the town centre.
Despite the large crowds, local Gardai reported a quieter than usual rally weekend.
“We are very happy with the way the weekend went,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser.
“There was nothing serious in terms of a negative headline that would reflect badly on the reputation of the town or that would cause concern for the general public.”
Mayor Marie Moloney was also full of praise for the event.
“The ceremonial start took place in Main Street on the Friday evening. This was attended by huge crowds and on the following two days thousands of people lined the viewing points along all the stages,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.
“This was a very successful rally which gave huge exposure of Killarney both nationally and internationally. I want to congratulate the organising committee who put in trojan work to ensure the success of the rally and the safety of spectators. I would also like to extend my congratulations to the winners in all of the categories.”
