Calls for a permanent theatre in Killarney town

A successful three-night run of short plays in a Killarney hotel has highlighted the need for a permanent theatre in the town.

Last week the Dochas Drama Group staged a three night short play run in the Killarney Avenue Hotel.

All three plays were written, produced and performed by members of the group.

Close on two hundred people attended the plays in the ballroom of the Killarney Avenue.

While the majority of the audience were local, the performances were also attended by visitors.

“The attendance reflects the appetite for drama in the Killarney area. Feedback from non-locals has been that they are incredulous that there is no theatre in the town. Maybe as locals we have just got used to it,” said Brian Bowler, who is an actor and director with the amateur group.

There are plans to include a new theatre in the redevelopment of the Áras Phádraig on Lewis Road but that is many years away.
