At a gateway leading into Killarney House & Gardens from the town centre is a memorial to Killarney's Monsignor Hugh O’Flahety, ‘The Vatican Pimpernel’, who saved the lives of 6,500 allied soldiers and Jews in Occupied Rome during World War II. The 2m high sculpture, by Valentia Island-based artist Alan Ryan Hall, depicts the monsignor striding across St Peter’s Square.
