<h4>A Renewed Commitment To Lead By Example</h4>
<p>Kilkenny County Council has reaffirmed its commitment to a Europe-wide initiative to tackle climate change and energy challenges. By renewing its pledge to the <strong>EU Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy,</strong> the Council aims to lead by example, working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, boost climate resilience, and address energy poverty.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<h4>A Pivotal Time</h4>
<p>Originally signed in 2015, this renewed commitment comes at a pivotal time for the Council. With a new administration elected in June and the adoption of <a href="https://xploreapp.io/kilkenny" target="_blank">Kilkenny’s</a> first-ever Climate Action Plan earlier this year, the move underscores the Council’s determination to align with updated EU climate and energy goals.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h4>Speaking at the signing, Cathaoirleach Cllr. Michael McCarthy highlighted the significance of the decision:&nbsp;&nbsp;</h4>
<blockquote>“Recommitting to this Climate and Energy Covenant demonstrates the leadership role that Kilkenny County Council is taking on climate action and our commitment to supporting a just transition for our citizens. We count on the Government and European Institutions to provide the support and resources to make this happen.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</blockquote>
<p>Through this renewed commitment, Kilkenny County Council signals its intent to create a greener, more resilient future for its communities, demonstrating that local leadership is key to addressing global challenges.</p>
<h4>Cllr. Eugene McGuinness, Chair of the Council’s Strategic Policy Committee for Environment Protection, Climate Action &amp; Energy, also praised the initiative:&nbsp;&nbsp;</h4>
<p>“This Covenant is a vital tool, supported by thousands of local authorities across Europe, that places citizens at the heart of climate action.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Council’s Climate Action Coordinator, Dearbhala Ledwidge, emphasised the alignment between the EU Covenant and the Kilkenny Climate Action Plan:&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>“The aims of this EU Covenant reflect our own vision for a sustainable future. Our Climate Action Office is committed to driving these efforts and supporting the Council’s delivery of both initiatives in the years ahead.”&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
