A large crowd gathered for the official reopening the Lacken Boardwalk following an €800,000 upgrade of the popular riverside walkway. 

Kilkenny city’s first composite construction of its kind was officially opened by Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr. Michael McCarthy, alongside Mayor of Kilkenny Municipal District, Cllr. Andrew McGuinness.  

Originally installed in 2012, the boardwalk has long been a key link in the Lacken Walk and the Nore Valley Walk, drawing both locals and visitors. 

However, with its timber structure aging and its narrow design struggling to accommodate growing foot traffic, a major upgrade was needed. 

The new boardwalk stretches 450 metres and is now three times wider than before at 3.6 metres, making it more accessible for wheelchair users, parents with prams, dog walkers, and those with reduced mobility. It also features quiet seating areas where visitors can take in the scenic riverside views.  

With its wider, more durable design and strong focus on sustainability, the new Lacken Boardwalk is set to remain a much-loved part of Kilkenny’s outdoor landscape for years to come.  

Speaking at the reopening, Cllr. McCarthy described the boardwalk as “a significant asset to the recreational offering of Kilkenny City.” He praised the project’s design and construction, crediting Kilkenny County Council, consultants Kilgallen and Partners, and contractors Triur Construction Ltd.  

A standout feature of the new boardwalk is its environmentally friendly design, built primarily from recycled plastic. With over 163 tonnes of recycled plastic used in its construction—equivalent to more than 7.5 million plastic bottles—the project prevented an estimated 400 tonnes of CO₂ emissions that would have resulted from incineration. Had traditional timber been used, around 250 mature trees would have been felled.  

Mayor McGuinness, reflecting on childhood memories of playing along the riverbank, called the boardwalk “a jewel in the crown of the Lacken area.” He noted how its improved design is already attracting a diverse mix of users, making it a more inclusive public space.  

The €800,000 project was funded through the Department for Rural and Community Development’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, with additional support from Kilkenny County Council.  

Frank Stafford, Senior Engineer with the Council, commended the management team and elected members for their vision and ongoing support of projects that enhance Kilkenny’s outdoor amenities.

Crowds Gather for Reopening of Lacken Boardwalk Along River Nore 

Investment in Kilkenny's road infrastructure has increased 9.5% on last year as the latest figures from the Department of Transport are announced. 

Kilkenny will receive €19.5m, which will be invested in restoration and maintenance works this year. This funding includes surfacing of regional and local roads, safety improvement works, drainage, and climate adaptation measures submitted by Kilkenny County Councils Roads Department. 

An increased allocation of 100k has been made in respect of Community Involvement Schemes which will greatly assist in works to small local roads around the county.

Also included in the 2025 allocation is an amount of €200,000 to progress the Kilkenny City North Transport Project, being the next phase of the City ring road, from the Castlecomer road to the Freshford road. 

An allocation has also been secured for the analysis of Kilkenny City Traffic (Butts Green Junctions) to improve connectivity and traffic movements in the Loughmacask neighbourhood.

Over €19m Investment in Roads Announced for Kilkenny in 2025

Grand Marshal and New Junior Grand Marshal Announced

Rás na mBan winner and Kilkenny woman Mia Griffin, will be the Grand Marshal and lead the Parade on St. Patrick's Day 2025. Mia Griffin is an Irish road and track cyclist with the Irish national team, and was part of the Irish cycling team at the Paris Olympics in 2024. The Glenmore-born local hero is the first Irish winner of Rás na mBan in over a decade.

"It is a great honour to be Grand Marshal in my home county, and it comes with great pride. I am looking forward to being in Kilkenny at the Parade and will enjoy every minute of the experience." 

For the first time, St. Patrick's Festival Kilkenny has announced a Junior Grand Marshal for the cultural celebration. Enya Cox Dempsey, hailing from Castlecomer, has already won the Junior Eurovision Éire 2024, aired on TG4 in 2024, at just 14 years of age, and represented her country at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in Madrid with her Irish-language song Le Chéile!

Enya shared her thoughts on being named the first Junior Grand Marshal in Kilkenny:

"It's truly an honour and a privilege to be the Junior Marshal of the St. Patrick's Day Parade for the first time this year. It's so lovely to be doing something locally in my home County. I wish you all a very happy St. Patrick's Day, and I hope to see you there!"

Festival Chairperson and Mayor of Kilkenny Municipal District, Cllr. Andrew McGuinness commented;

"We are delighted to have two accomplished Kilkenny women leading our Grand Parade this year. They have done their County proud on a national stage, and we couldn't think of better representatives to lead this year's celebration." 

The 2025 St. Patrick's Festival Kilkenny is a four-day spectacular with 120 events throughout the city from March 14th to March 17th. Festival organisers expect 100,000 people to attend the events in Kilkenny. It will see the return of festival favourites: the market, street theatre and fireworks, and exciting new offerings. The weekend culminates in the big spectacle, the St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 17th, and two days of free live music and performances on the festival stage.

Fáilte Ireland identified six locations outside the capital as part of an initiative to position Ireland as the only place for overseas tourists to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. 

Kilkenny, along with Cork, Killarney, Waterford, Sligo, and Limerick were selected, all uniquely showcasing Irish culture through their individual St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

The joint launch with Kilkenny Tradfest took place on Thursday, February 20th, in Paris Texas, in the city centre.

Speaking at the launch of St. Patrick's Festival Kilkenny 2025, Ciara Sugrue, Head of Festivals and Event Fáilte Ireland said,

Grand Marshal and New Junior Grand Marshal For Kilkenny St Patricks Parade

Irish culture, history, and heritage will be at the centre of the upcoming St. Patrick's Festival 2025, with a series of events dedicated to significant historical figures in Kilkenny. Kilkenny recently marked 700 years since the witch trial of Alice Kyteler, the first of its kind in Ireland. The historic event saw the noblewoman escape from peril whilst her associate Petronella de Meath was executed in her place. 

On St. Patrick's Day, in a dramatic display, the Kilkenny Historical Re-enactment Group will take visitors back to Medieval Kilkenny to relive that fateful day of November 3rd in the year 1324. The re-enactment will see the infamous Bishop Ledrede lay seven charges against the wealthy woman and her employee, and parade them through the streets of Kilkenny.

Following the St. Patrick's Day Parade, the group will depict the trial and subsequent execution of Petronella de Meath in a short performance at Rothe House and Garden. Regular performers at the St. Patrick's Festival, the Historical Kilkenny Re-enactment Group, share history through visual displays for further generations to learn about the past.

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is credited with bringing Christianity to the country. St. Patrick's Day, or the Feast of St. Patrick, has evolved into a global celebration of Irish heritage and culture, featuring parades, food, music, dancing, and more. March 17th is believed to be the date of his death, and we commemorate him each year at home and around the world. 

Among the historic highlights at St. Patrick's Festival Kilkenny 2025 is a chance to dive into Ireland's rich military heritage with a guided tour of the James Stephens Military Barracks Museum, led by retired Commandant Larry Scallan. Comdt Scallan will also deliver a fascinating look at Tom Treacy, Kilkenny's forgotten Commander (1919 – 1923) at Parade Tower. The talk will detail Tom Treacy's early life and explain his important role in Irish independence from 1914 to 1922.

Visitors can learn about Kilkenny’s medieval history and explore the City’s streetscapes on two walking tours, the (self-guided) Medieval Mile Street Tour and the Medieval Moments Walking Tour, with experienced guide Nevin Cody stopping at key locations to recount historical events and stories of local legends.

A new pilot scheme has been launched to encourage local cafés in Kilkenny city to extend their opening hours and host cultural events after 6pm. 

Café Lates is designed to meet the demand from locals and tourists alike to enjoy a range of activities after 6pm. It is a direct response to feedback gathered in a survey conducted last year as part of the Night Time Economy Pilot Initiative, which highlighted strong demand for later evening and night-time café openings.

Funding Available for Cultural Programming

Kilkenny County Council is inviting local cafés in the city to apply for funding to support engaging cultural programming after 6pm on two selected evenings: Thursday, 17th April, and Thursday, 29th May.

Successful applicants will receive grants ranging from €350 to €750, provided they extend their operating hours by at least two hours beyond 6pm on both dates. Mayor of Kilkenny City, Cllr Andrew McGuinness, emphasised the potential impact of the initiative:

By renewing its pledge to the EU Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the Council aims to lead by example, working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, boost climate resilience, and address energy poverty.  

Originally signed in 2015, this renewed commitment comes at a pivotal time for the Council. With a new administration elected in June and the adoption of Kilkenny’s first-ever Climate Action Plan earlier this year, the move underscores the Council’s determination to align with updated EU climate and energy goals.  

Speaking at the signing, Cathaoirleach Cllr. Michael McCarthy highlighted the significance of the decision:  

“Recommitting to this Climate and Energy Covenant demonstrates the leadership role that Kilkenny County Council is taking on climate action and our commitment to supporting a just transition for our citizens. We count on the Government and European Institutions to provide the support and resources to make this happen.”  

Through this renewed commitment, Kilkenny County Council signals its intent to create a greener, more resilient future for its communities, demonstrating that local leadership is key to addressing global challenges.

Kilkenny County Council Renews Commitment to EU Climate Action  

Yulefest, Christmas in Kilkenny is finally here! 

Join Santa as he arrives to Kilkenny to officially launch Yulefest Kilkenny 2024 on Saturday, 30th November. Keeping with tradition, Santa will travel by boat down the River Nore, before taking a trip around the city and finishing up at Kilkenny Castle. 

Finally, he will join Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr. Michael McCarthy, Mayor of Kilkenny Municipal District, Cllr Andrew McGuinness, and Castlecomer’s super musician Enya Cox on The Parade for the switching on of the Christmas Tree Lights. 

Old and young are encouraged to come out and welcome Santa to town.  Enjoy live music, the Yulefest Christmas Market and maybe even get a picture with the big man himself. The festivities will begin on Canal Square at 2pm and Santa will turn on the lights on The Parade between 4.30pm and 5pm. 

The Mobile Sensory Hub will also be present at this year’s Yulefest Launch on November 30th and finale on Saturday December 21st. This will be a calm and safe sensory space for those who need it. This December, Yulefest are bringing live entertainment to the streets of Kilkenny. If you are an individual musician or a group, enter now to win €500.  Twelve artists will be selected to perform acoustically on the streets of Kilkenny on Friday nights in December.

The overall winner gets the €500, together with recording time in studio and airplay on KCLR.

The National Reptile Zoo Pop-up Workshops with the 12 Scéals of Hiss’mas: 

Join The National Reptile Zoo for a journey through the festive season around the world – told through the lens of the reptiles, amphibians and insects that live there! An interactive learning experience featuring new animals each week, with activities for everyone!

These weekly workshops will take place every Friday throughout Yulefest in the Yulefest Yurt on The Parade. Each workshop will include 3 animal encounters, stories of winter celebrations from the places the animals come from and a ‘Hiss’Mass’ game/activity. An engaging and unique event for children and families each Friday in December. 

Santa and Mrs Claus will be arriving to Kilkenny in style on December 8th. Watch the lit-up Santa truck drive past or join us at its final stop on The Parade, beside the Yulefest Christmas Market, where Children will be able to come aboard the truck and see Santa’s Grotto. On the night Santa’s helpers will be taking donations for the LauraLynn Hospice or you can donate online through their idonate page. Come out and say hello at this unique Christmas experience!

Be entertained every weekend with music, dancing and family entertainment with free live local performances on the Yulefest Live Music Stage in the new Yulefest Yurt. Yulefest Kilkenny Kick's Off This Weekend

Kilkenny County Council Library Service has received Age Friendly Status for each of its eight library branches as well as the Mobile Library Service. This achievement, guided by Age Friendly Ireland, follows significant efforts to create an inclusive, accessible experience tailored to the needs of older patrons.

To earn this recognition, library staff completed specialised training and engaged in a consultation process with local groups, organisations, and library members. Through this process,  actions were identified and implemented across the library network, all designed to enhance the experience of older community members.

Among the improvements are designated Age Friendly parking at Castlecomer Library and convenient Age Friendly trolleys at the Graiguenamanagh, Ferrybank, and Loughboy branches. In addition, each branch now offers reading aids, making it easier for all visitors to enjoy their library time. The branches also regularly host a wide array of events that cater to older audiences, with a calendar that includes various workshops and activities.

In May 2024, library branches hosted workshops in memoir writing, drama, art, and music, offering patrons of all ages the chance to explore and express themselves.

This autumn, Kilkenny Library launched a collaborative programme with the Kilkenny County Council Age Friendly Programme, the Older People’s Council, Kilkenny Recreation and Sports Partnership, the HSE, and An Garda Síochána at the newly opened Mayfair Library. Over eight weeks, this initiative provided talks on health and well-being, community safety, assisted decision-making, and safeguarding, engaging older residents on key topics in their lives.

Karyn Deegan, Kilkenny Library Service Age Friendly Coordinator, expressed her pride in the achievement:

“We are delighted at our recent achievement of receiving an Age Friendly Status for our libraries, as it recognises the effort of our staff to provide an inclusive provision of service to older people. Kilkenny retailers have joined forces with Kilkenny County Council to create an eye-catching video to drive footfall and showcase the city’s fantastic retail offering and visitor attractions along the route of Ireland’s Medieval Mile.

Ireland’s Medieval Mile runs through the centre of Kilkenny City, linking the 13th Century St. Canice’s Cathedral and the Anglo-Norman Kilkenny Castle and the compact, captivating and cosmopolitan City in between. 

The new #shopkilkenny Medieval Mile video and social media campaign showcase how visitors on the Medieval Mile route can immerse themselves in ancient history, while also enjoying a unique shopping and dining experience that includes multi-generational, family-owned boutiques, shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, food, gift, craft, jewellers and household outlets and so much more.

The medieval capital of Ireland, Kilkenny city has preserved and enriched its medieval heritage which is visible through the streets and laneways, historical buildings, secret slipways and famous landmarks, all of which are tastefully surrounded by high quality retail and hospitality offerings.

Eye-Catching New Medieval Mile Video Showcases Kilkenny Retail

A new social and affordable housing scheme will transform a disused site in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny into a vibrant community with 42 homes. 

The development at Abbeyhill, Ladywell Street, Thomastown is located at the front of the new Primary Care Centre within walking distance of Thomastown Town Centre. 

The housing units at Abbeyhill have been designed by Van Dijk Architects for Kilkenny County Council and will feature a mix of 1, 2, 3, and 4-bedroom units, catering to a variety of housing needs. I

In addition, the project includes roadways, parking, a bin store, and landscaped areas. Hayes Higgins Partnership are the Consulting Engineers on the project. 

Ormonde Construction Ltd, based in Kilkenny City has been appointed as the contractor for this significant project under a Design Build Contract, with Brian Dunlop Architects acting for Ormonde Construction.

<p>The development at Abbeyhill, Ladywell Street, Thomastown is located at the front of the new Primary Care Centre within walking distance of Thomastown Town Centre.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The housing units at Abbeyhill have been designed by Van Dijk Architects for Kilkenny County Council and will feature a mix of 1, 2, 3, and 4-bedroom units, catering to a variety of housing needs. I</p>
<p>In addition, the project includes roadways, parking, a bin store, and landscaped areas. Hayes Higgins Partnership are the Consulting Engineers on the project.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ormonde Construction Ltd, based in Kilkenny City has been appointed as the contractor for this significant project under a Design Build Contract, with Brian Dunlop Architects acting for Ormonde Construction.&nbsp;</p>

<h4>Lar Power, Chief Executive of Kilkenny County Council said:</h4>
<p>&nbsp;“We are delighted to break ground on this much-needed housing scheme in Thomastown and look forward to working with Ormonde Construction on this project.  The new units will cater to a diverse range of residents, ensuring that families, individuals, and those with special needs have access to safe and comfortable homes."</p>
<p>The project is being delivered under the Housing for All Programme.&nbsp;</p>
<h4>Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr. Michael McCarthy, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating,&nbsp;</h4>
<p>“This development is a testament to our ongoing efforts to provide essential housing solutions for our community. We are excited to see the positive impact it will have on the lives of many residents.”</p>
<p>The construction is set to begin shortly, with an expected completion date in early 2026.  Kilkenny County Council and Ormonde Construction are committed to ensuring that the project is completed on time and to the highest standards.</p>
