Step back in time and discover the Hole in the Wall, a hidden gem nestled in a narrow alley off High Street in Kilkenny. This 18th-century tavern, once the epicentre of the city's nightlife, was frequented by local elite and tradesmen alike. The tavern's success was largely due to its proprietor, Tom Clayton, and his personal connection to John Butler, also known as Jack of the Castle. Among its patrons were notable figures like Sir Jonah Barrington, Harry Flood, Henry Gratton, Sir Hercules Langrishe, and Arthur Wellesley, who later became the first Duke of Wellington. The Hole in the Wall served as a lively gathering spot where social connections were made and maintained. Sedan chairs were the taxis of the era, and Kilkenny had a stand of nine, offering a unique mode of transport for patrons visiting the tavern. However, the tavern was also known for its occasional quarrels, which sometimes escalated to deadly duels, like the tragic incident between John MaCartney and James Young in 1798. After standing empty for years, the Hole in the Wall has been lovingly restored by Dr. Michael Conway, and today, it offers a more sober form of entertainment. Don't miss the chance to experience a piece of Kilkenny's rich history as you enjoy your self-guided tour of the city.
