Welcome to the Black Abbey, a Catholic priory founded in 1225 by William Marshal the younger. Home to the Dominican Order, the name "Black Abbey" comes from the black cloaks worn by the Dominicans, also known as the "Black Friars." Located between the Irish and English (Norman) settlements in Kilkenny, the priory has faced various challenges, including annual flooding from the nearby river. Throughout its history, the Black Abbey has experienced numerous changes in fortune, with properties confiscated and later returned under different rulers. Notable features of the Black Abbey include the Rosary Window, Ireland's largest stained glass window, created in 1892 by Mayers of Munich. The Abbey's structure, consisting of a nave, choir, and transept, is typical of Dominican and Franciscan monasteries in Ireland. Take a moment to explore and appreciate the resilience of this historic site, as you continue your self-guided tour of Kilkenny.
