Discover the rich history of St. Francis Abbey, founded between 1231 and 1234 by Richard Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke. The Order of Friars Minor, established by Francis of Assisi, expanded the abbey over time, even holding provincial chapters here in 1267 and 1308. Surviving the tumultuous times of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the abbey changed hands and saw the friars expelled and returning multiple times. By 1829, the last friar passed away, marking the end of an era. Interestingly, the monks had been brewing ale since the 14th century. In 1710, Smithwick's Brewery was established on the grounds to brew Irish red ale. During the brewery's expansion in 1854, parts of the abbey were uncovered. Today, the sacristy has been restored as an oratory within the brewery. As you explore St. Francis Abbey, take a moment to appreciate its fascinating history and its unique connection to the world of brewing.
