Embark on a riveting journey through history with a visit to the Kilkenny Union Workhouse, now beautifully repurposed as MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre. Located conveniently adjacent to the Kilkenny Train Station, this self-guided audio-visual tour is entirely complimentary. Immerse yourself in the stirring and heart-rending personal narratives gleaned from local newspaper accounts and Board of Guardians' minute books. These records faithfully capture the lived experiences of Workhouse inmates and staff during the Kilkenny Famine. The tour spans approximately 50 minutes and guides you through 9 distinct locations within the Shopping Centre. Each stop is clearly marked on a complimentary map provided to you. Reservations can be made, but you are also welcome to simply approach the Customer Service Desk for a walk-up tour anytime between 9am-1pm or 2pm-5pm daily. For an enhanced listening experience, free headphone loans are provided. This tour is suitable for children, but parental discretion is recommended. This self-guided audio-visual tour starts with a brief orientation by a Customer Service representative, who will demonstrate how to use the handheld AV unit. Your historical exploration begins and ends at the Customer Service Desk in the Shopping Centre.
