Keane's Shop

Keane’s Ltd. is one of the oldest shops in Gort, a pub/shop establishment and wool merchant founded c1812, which “sells everything from a needle to an anchor”. Keane's are now general merchants with a 7-day publicans licence. They are worldwide wool exporters and animal feedstuff providers. WB Yeats did his shopping here and has a balance still outstanding on the ledger! Keanes still has the ring used by Yeats to tie his horse outside the shop. The Bianconi coaches, Ireland’s leading stagecoach at the time, used to change their horses in the yard on Barrack Street. The family used to have a cinema just down the street where silent movies were shown.
