Established in 1856, Whelan’s family-run public house in Shanaglish, Co. Galway is a quiet, rural gem situated on the Ennis side of Gort, just off the R458, and nestling between The Burren and Lough Cutra. It is a rare and unique public house, which has been home to many sessions of song, music storytelling and dance. The world-famous “Nights in Shanaglish” cd, a 25 track album of superior local music and song was recorded in Whelan’s and re-creates the atmosphere of a real Irish “session” reflecting the community spirit of Whelan’s. A Mobile food truck visits the car park at weekends to ensure the hungry are well fed with a range of tasty burgers etc. Be sure to ask Michael Whelan about the local connection to the famous Lunch Atop A Skyscraper photo that hangs on the wall.
