<h4>University of Galway To Welcome More Than 3,500 New Students</h4>
<p>University of Galway has issued offers to 3,753 prospective students for the 2024/25 academic year.  On the back of a fourth year in a row of significant demand for places in third level education, University of Galway is offering 3,753 places for first year undergraduate students.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The recent release of Round One offers in the Central Applications Office (CAO) process has revealed significant trends at the University of Galway, with a variety of its degree programmes witnessing changes in cut-off points. These shifts underscore the university’s continued appeal across a range of disciplines, particularly in the arts, sciences, and engineering.</p>
<h4>Mixed Movement in Points Across Courses</h4>
<p>The cut-off levels for University of Galway degrees have shown varied movement, with nearly a third of the courses either increasing their required points or maintaining previous levels. Notably, around 40% of the university's degree programmes now fall within the 500-600 points range, highlighting the competitive nature of admissions.</p>
<h4>Surge in Creative Arts Programme Demand</h4>
<p>One of the standout changes was observed in the Arts (Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies) programme, which saw an increase of 41 points. This rise reflects a growing interest in the creative arts, bolstered by the University of Galway's strong reputation as an international hub for the arts. Strategic partnerships with the Galway International Arts Festival and Druid Theatre Company have likely contributed to this increased demand, reinforcing the appeal to prospective students.</p>
<h4>Engineering and Science Courses Continue to Excel</h4>
<p>The university’s flagship engineering and science degrees continue to attract strong demand, with Biomedical Engineering now requiring 578 points—an increase of 30 points from the previous year. Similarly, Biomedical Science saw a modest increase, now standing at 577 points. These fields remain highly competitive, mirroring the ongoing demand for expertise in these critical areas.</p>
<p>All Engineering and Law programs at the University of Galway have maintained high entry requirements, with cut-off points remaining above 500.&nbsp;</p>
<h4>Growing Interest in Erasmus-Linked Programmes</h4>
<p>The university’s commitment to providing global learning opportunities through extensive Erasmus programmes has also paid off, with several related courses experiencing a rise in points. Programmes such as BA Global Languages, BComm International (Spanish), and BSc Biotechnology have all seen increased demand.</p>
<h4>Medical and Therapy Courses in High Demand</h4>
<p>The Medical programme at the University of Galway continues to be one of the most sought-after, with the cut-off at 728 points. Meanwhile, there has been a significant expansion in the availability of places for students pursuing degrees in Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy. The number of places has increased by almost 50%, following a government announcement of additional funding in these critical healthcare areas.&nbsp;</p>
<h4>Commerce Programmes Maintain High Standards</h4>
<p>Commerce remains a popular choice among applicants, with five out of the university's eight commerce programmes now requiring over 500 points. This trend highlights the sustained interest in business-related degrees.</p>
<p>The following are some of the <strong>key trends</strong> following the issuing of Round One offers in the CAO process:</p>

<li>Flagship programmes for University of Galway which continue to attract strong demand are Biomedical Engineering, with points increasing to 578 (up 30), and Biomedical Science, at 577 (up 10 points).&nbsp;</li>
<li>Medicine remains random allocation at 728 points.&nbsp;</li>
<li>The number of places available for students seeking to study Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy degrees are up by almost 50% - that is an additional 30 places across the two programmes, which follows a Government announcement of increased funding in these areas.&nbsp;</li>

<p>Following Round One of the Central Applications Office (CAO) process, President of University of Galway Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh and Deputy President and Registrar Professor Peter McHugh acknowledge the effort and achievement of the Leaving Certificate class of 2024, the vast majority of whom were sitting state exams for the first time.&nbsp;</p>
