Ocean Calling

Galway’s deep connection to the sea and nature takes centre stage this Wednesday evening, as artist Caroline Bridie Gower unveils her latest exhibition, Ocean Calling, at the PorterShed.

Running until the end of February, the exhibition opens with a special event from 6pm to 8pm on February 19th.

Ocean Calling captures Galway's landscape, and the Burren, through Gower’s artistic lens, as she connects with the themes of conservation, the sea, and the unique spirit of the west.

A Natural Artist

Gower’s work is heavily influenced by the Irish coastline, particularly the Burren’s unique landscape, vibrant flora, and the wildlife she has encountered throughout her artistic journey.

"My work is inspired a lot by the Irish sea and wildlife, just by things I have seen in the Burren and nature," she says.

This exhibition is more than just a visual appreciation of the West of Ireland—it also reflects Gower’s passion for conservation.

Currently collaborating with scientists on an environmental project, her art explores Galway’s relationship with the sea and its delicate ecosystems.

One of her key inspirations was the striking giant swan installation from the Galway International Arts Festival, a symbol that resonated with her love for Galway’s artistic and natural heritage.

A Love of Galway

Gower has deep roots in Galway, having lived here five years ago before travelling abroad. Now, she’s returning to the city she always felt drawn to.

"I always wanted to live as an artist. I love the sea—it’s a vibe," she says. "It’s very international, but on a really small scale, so you just bump into people."

Her time in Galway during lockdown, spent living in the Claddagh with housemates from Portugal, Argentina, Italy, and Spain, further strengthened her bond with the city.

"That was at the Claddagh with a sea view," she recalls, emphasising how Galway’s cultural diversity and natural beauty continue to inspire her artistic practice.
