The Old Forge was built c1800 and was in use until the 1960s. WB Yeats used to get his horse shod here. The plaque on the Forge echoes the text that Yeats had erected on his tower house of Thoor Ballylee: “I the poet William Yeats, With old millboard and sea green slate, And smithy work from the Gort forge, Restore this tower for my wife George, And may those characters remain When all is ruin once again.”
