Atlantic Technological University (ATU) marked International Men’s Day on Tuesday, November 19th, with a series of events and discussions aimed at celebrating the positive value men bring to their families and communities. 

Organised in partnership with Galway City Council’s ‘Healthy Ireland’ initiative, the day focused on this year’s theme, 'Positive Male Role Models.' 

The flagship event took place at the Dublin Road campus in Galway. The celebrations featured contributions from city barbers ‘Nelki’s’ and ‘The Sanctuary,’ who provided free haircuts to students .

The highlight of the day was a panel discussion with author and coach Máirtín Óg McDonagh, poet and author Stephen Murphy, and entrepreneur Kevin Nugent.  Led by Renagh Linnane, ATU Student Counsellor and Chair of the ATU Galway Mayo Mental Health Task Force, the discussion was streamed live across ATU’s nine campuses. 

Máirtín Óg McDonagh, whose upcoming book 'Difficult Conversations: Dialling into Every Aspect of Your Life' is set for release later this month, emphasised the importance of addressing difficult conversations. 

“These conversations are something men tend to avoid, often with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their peers. It’s vital to create opportunities for men to talk, be heard, and connect,” he said.  

Renagh Linnane, Student Counsellor and Chair of the ATU Galway Mayo Mental Health Task Force, who hosted the International Men’s Day panel discussion.  

Renagh Linnane expressed her excitement in hosting the event. 

“I am delighted to MC this discussion, which highlights the importance of celebrating and connecting men in our community. It’s inspiring to see the generosity and wisdom shared by our panelists and contributors,” she said.

“International Men’s Day gives us a moment to reflect on and celebrate the incredible men in our communities, workplaces, and educational institutions. We hope today’s discussions inspire men to support and connect with each other,” she said.  

The event is part of ongoing efforts by the ATU Galway Mayo Mental Health Task Force, which works to enhance mental health systems and initiatives aligned with the Higher Education Authority’s National Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Framework.  

The celebrations underscored ATU’s and Galway City Council’s commitment to fostering inclusivity, community, and well-being as part of the broader Healthy Ireland initiative, a government-led program aimed at improving health and well-being across the country.

ATU Celebrates International Men’s Day with Events and Talks  

Galway City Council will host a ‘drop in’ information evening on Affordable Housing on Monday, November 25th from 4pm-8pm, in the Connacht Hotel, Old Dublin Road. 

On the evening, staff will be available to meet with members of the public to discuss affordable housing options. Burkeway Homes will also be at the event to share information on the first Affordable Units being delivered in Galway  City in over a decade. The Garraí na Sailí development on Letteragh Road is anticipated to be delivered in Summer 2025. Registration for the information evening is open at www.GalwayCity.ie

Under the Affordable Purchase Scheme, Galway City Council will make newly built homes available at a reduced price for first-time and other eligible buyers, who cannot afford to purchase a home at its open market value, even with a maximum mortgage and 10% deposit.

Louise Esler, Housing Capital, Galway City Council explained, 

“Under the Affordable Housing scheme, the local authority will take a percentage equity share in your home equal to the difference between the open market value of the home and the reduced price paid. This means that if you buy a home at a 20% reduction on the open market value, the local authority will have a 20% equity share in your home. This information evening will give the public a chance to ask questions about how the scheme operates, and to find out more about the affordable units coming on stream in Garraí na Sailí next year.”

Speaking about the information evening, Elizabeth Fanning, Acting Director of Services, commented, 

“Galway City Council is delighted to host this information evening on the affordable housing scheme. Affordable housing plays a significant role it in the Galway City Development Plan. There is considerable demand for affordable homes in the city and a range of regulatory frameworks and funding mechanisms to support delivery”.

The information evening follows a recent Galway City Council and Galway County Council breakfast briefing on affordable housing for developers, focusing on a solutions-based approach to the housing crisis.

Impressive Shortlist for Galway Age Friendly Housing 

A purpose-built housing development for older residents, celebrated for its accessible, sustainable design that supports aging has been shortlisted for a prestigious award. 

Located in Galway city,  An Cliathán was created in collaboration with local authorities and community members. Galway City Council has been shortlisted for an award in the Housing Category at the National Age Friendly Recognition and Achievement Awards.  

The development combines modern design with accessibility, featuring barrier-free entrances, accessible transport links, communal spaces, and green areas to encourage active lifestyles and community connections. 

Leonard Cleary, Chief Executive of Galway City Council, shared his pride in the recognition: 

“Being shortlisted under the Housing category for these awards is a testament to Galway City Council’s commitment to designing and delivering housing that caters to the needs of older adults while promoting intergenerational inclusivity.”

Deputy Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Níall McNelis, added, 

“The collaboration between OCC Construction, Galway City Council, and the Design Team produced a high-quality development that provides much-needed housing units in Galway City. It is a great step forward in the Galway City Council Housing Delivery Action Plan 2022-2026.”

An Cliathán’s quality was also recognised earlier this year when OCC Construction won best project in the "Residential up to €5M" category at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards 2024.

The Age Friendly Recognition and Achievement Awards, organised by Age Friendly Ireland, honour projects that enhance the lives of older adults in communities, fostering independent, healthy living. An Cliathán complements the Galway City Age Friendly Programme, which seeks to improve the services and facilities older residents value most.
