<h4>Highlighting Art's Impact on Ecology and Environmental Action</h4>
<p>TULCA Festival of Visual Arts: The Salvage Agency, curated by Michele Horrigan, kicks off this Friday, bringing an inspiring array of contemporary art from Irish and international artists to Galway City.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This year’s festival introduces exciting new venues, including the University of Galway’s Zoology and Marine Biology Museum and the James Mitchell Geology Museum, alongside historic sites like the Hall of the Red Earl.&nbsp;</p>
<h4>Official Launch This Friday</h4>
<p>The main Festival Gallery will take up residence at the Printworks on Market Street, where the official launch will take place on Friday, 1st November at 7pm to celebrate the opening of TULCA 2024 and unveil the festival’s companion publication, The Salvage Agency. Audiences can look forward to an immersive experience, with each venue offering unique insights into the vibrant intersection of art, ecology, environmentalism and activism.</p>

<h4>The Salvage Agency</h4>
<p>This publication acts as a reader for the exhibition and public programme, giving further insights into the processes and intentions of The Salvage Agency and its various contributors.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Salvage Agency considers the agency and role of art in contemporary ecology and environmental action. Galway, on the edge of the northeast Atlantic, is a unique location for a heightened awareness of what is at stake. Explorations of landscape, seascape and nature, public space, colonial history, political structures, the industrial complex and folk narratives are all important.&nbsp;</p>
<h4>The City by Walter Macken</h4>
<p>Novelist and playwright Walter Macken’s short story The City, written in the early 1940s, finds Galway casting aside humanity’s desire for accumulation and riches, instead revealing a place that is of the earth, and of all lifeforms that inhabit it.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Catching up, decades later, with Macken’s vision has been central to The Salvage Agency.  This publication has been produced on the occasion of the 22nd edition of TULCA Festival of Visual Arts, The Salvage Agency.</p>
<h4>An Exciting Line-Up</h4>
<p>TULCA 2024 will offer an exciting lineup of events.&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Highlights include The TULCA Assembly, a gathering of critical voices from Ireland, Europe, and the U.S. to explore the intersections of art, activism, and environmental discourse, happening on 9th November at PorterShed.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Palás Cinema will screen short films by renowned artists like Joan Jonas and Patrick Hough, showcasing dynamic visual narratives.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Stuart Whipps will present a unique performance about the James Mitchell Geology Museum, inspired by its vast collection of rock, mineral, and fossil specimens.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Audiences can also join an interactive bus performance, “Beyond Survival School Bus (2022)” by Léann Herlihy, and enjoy walking tours, gallery tours and artist talks throughout the Festival.</li>
</ul>
<h4>New Commissions and More:</h4>
<p>The 2024 programme will feature new commissions, artistic contributions and exhibitions by:</p>
<p>Seanie Barron, David Beattie, Stephen Brandes, John Carson, Ruth Clinton and Niamh Moriarty, Michelle Doyle and Cóilín O’Connell, Bryony Dunne, Peter Fend and Finn Van Gelderen, Regina José Galindo, Léann Herlihy, Michael Holly, Patrick Hough, Joan Jonas, Catriona Leahy, Julie Morrissy, Áine Phillips, Jorge Satorre, Niamh Schmidtke, Temporary Services / Half Letter Press / Breakdown Break Down Press / Public Collectors, Lily Van Oost and Stuart Whipps.</p>
<p>TULCA Festival of Visual Arts is supported by the Arts Council, Galway City Council and Galway County Council.</p>
