ESRI’s Martina Lawless, research professor at the Economic and Social Research Institute , will deliver a public lecture on the topic “Brexit and the Irish Economy” to final year GMIT business students on Monday, 2 March, 1pm (Room 128), GMIT Galway (Dublin Road) campus. Members of the public are welcome to attend this free event.

After three years of exit negotiations, the UK is officially no longer a member of the EU since 31 January 2020. A new phase of negotiations to decide the longer-term relationship between the UK and EU is about to commence. Professor Lawless’ lecture looks at some of the economic issues likely to dominate this second phase and the implications for Ireland of the different outcomes at stake.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Martina Lawless joined the ESRI in 2015 and her research focuses primarily on firm-level dynamics, covering a range of topics such job turnover, exporting, wage setting and foreign direct investment. Her current projects at the ESRI relate to taxation, firm credit access, export diversification and the impact of Brexit on the Irish economy.

Professor Lawless previously worked as a research economist in the Central Bank of Ireland, for ten years, and has a doctorate from Trinity College Dublin. She is currently a member of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council.
