<p>Galway UNESCO City of Film celebrated a major milestone recently with an event honouring the work of acclaimed filmmaker Bob Quinn. Taking place at the Pálás Cinema, the evening featured a reception, the presentation of an award, and a screening of ‘Poitín’, a film that is a cornerstone in Quinn’s career.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The focus of the event was the presentation of the Ceantar Scannán Award to Bob Quinn by two distinguished guests: President Michael D. Higgins and filmmaker and producer Lelia Doolan. This award honours Quinn's contributions to Irish cinema, particularly his influential work in the west of Ireland.</p>

<h4>An Irish Film Pioneer&nbsp;</h4>
<p>For five decades, Quinn has been a central figure in Irish filmmaking, with a focus on the people, landscapes, and traditions of the west of Ireland. His body of work spans fiction, documentaries, and experimental films.&nbsp;</p>
<p>His films explore themes of identity, language, and culture, often focusing on Ireland's Gaelic traditions. Works like ‘Cinegael Paradiso’ and ‘Atlantean’ blend documentary techniques with creative narratives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>President Michael D. Higgins addressed Quinn’s vital role in shaping the landscape of Irish film.</p>
<p>Lelia Doolan, a trailblazer in Irish television and film, jointly presented the award. Doolan, who has collaborated with Quinn throughout their careers, shared her perspective on Quinn’s legacy, to include his support for emerging filmmakers, and on Galway’s UNESCO designation.</p>
<p>Both President Higgins and Lelia Doolan were previous recipients of the Galway City of Film award, in 2015 and in 2019 respectively, alongside Máire Ní Thuathail (deceased) who was privately honoured in 2016 for her work as a producer in Irish language television.</p>

<h4>An Evening to Celebrate Cinema</h4>
<p>The event began with a reception at the Pálás Cinema bar, where guests viewed a presentation on the history of Galway as a City of Film – a history that spans back as far as 1898. The award ceremony featured speeches from Ardán CEO and Galway City of Film Director Alan Duggan, Lelia Doolan, and ATU Head of Celine Curtin, before Quinn accepted the City of Film Award. The night culminated in a special screening of Bob Quinn’s remastered Irish-language feature film ‘Poitín’.</p>

<h4>A Decade of Galway as a UNESCO City of Film&nbsp;</h4>
<p>The 10th anniversary of Galway’s designation as a UNESCO City of Film is a major achievement. Since 2014, this recognition has helped foster a film culture in Galway, attracting both local and international productions and supporting local filmmakers.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ardán manages the Galway City of Film / Ceantar Scannán UNESCO designation on behalf of Galway City and Galway County Councils.</p>
<p>Bob Quinn’s work aligns with the spirit of this designation, as his films have consistently highlighted the unique stories and landscapes of the west of Ireland. His work has been instrumental in positioning Galway as a creative hub for film, and his legacy continues to influence filmmakers in the region and beyond.&nbsp;</p>
