Akumakon NUIG Campus, 17th-19th Jan

Akumakon is a cultural convention that celebrates all things anime, manga and Japanese culture.

Every year they welcome guests from all over the world including Japan, the UK and the US. Special guests appearing this year are famous cosplayer Florencia Soden, producer/drector Yutaka Yamamoto, YouTuber Masakox, and voice actors Aaron Dismuke and Sarah Wiedenheft.

There’ll be Q&amp;A sessions with the special guests along with cosplay contests, video games, movie screenings and card games. The opening ceremony takes place at 5pm, Friday 17th January.

Operation Transformation Walk Salthill, 18th Jan

Shane Farrell is a teacher from Galway and a leader on the hit RTE TV series Operation Transformation.

When Shane was 15 he was diagnosed with a neurological conditon that affects his bladder, making him sick and prone to constant infections. He has overcome adversity having had three children with his wife Clodagh despite being told by doctors he would never be able.&nbsp;

The constant illnesses that affect him, however, have meant he has relied on food as a comfort which led to a large weight gain. There is a major surgery Shane can have to help his conditon but in order to do so he needs to lose 7 stone.

There’ll be a walk to support Shane in his Operation Transformation quest this Saturday in Salthill.&nbsp;

Registration from 10:15am in LeisureLand. The walk kicks off at 11am

John Conneely Inc, The Roisin Dubh, 19th January

No Galway weekend is complete without a trip to the Roisin Dubh to catch John Conneely Inc.&nbsp;

John and his musician friends have a residency every Sunday night playing original adaptations of jazz and blues songs along with contemporary covers from the 80’s and 90’s.&nbsp;

Their ‘Big Band’ sound covering hits like My Baby Just Cares for Me, Wicked Game and Glory Box has attracted a loyal following every week. Instruments like sax, keyboards and dobro along with the rich vocals of Italian singer Barbara Vulso and John himself make for plush renditions and a night of high-quality musical entertainment.&nbsp;

Another one for the Galway bucket list.&nbsp;
