JAZZGate: The Music of Charlie Parker feat. Bertrand Huve (sax) The Black Gate, Jan 9th

Curated by Aengus Hackett, the weekly Jazzgate returns tonight with the music of Charlie Parker.

Born in Kansas City in 1920, Parker was an American composer and saxophonist who made huge developments in jazz in his short life (he died aged 34). He was a leading figure in the development of bebop, a style of jazz created in the 1940s characterized by fast tempos, improvisation, rhythmic unpredictability, and harmonic complexity. It is said that he is one of the most important figures in Jazz History.&nbsp;

The Jazzgate tribute to Parker will feature Bertand Huve on sax, Aengus Hackett on guitar, Dan Bodwell on bass and Miki Belton on drums.&nbsp;

From the killer bassline of Waiting for an Alibi to the sheer heartbreak of Still in Love with You, legendary frontman and bassist Phil Lynott gave us many reasons to love the music of Thin Lizzy and his solo career.&nbsp;

On Friday night tribute band Remembering Lizzy will honour his memory and music by marking the 34th anniversary of his death with a special gig playing a mixture of Thin Lizzy rock classics and solo hits.&nbsp;

If you’re new to the City of Tribes, or even a local who’s not particularly into the sport, a Connacht Rugby game is one for the Galway bucket list.&nbsp;

It’s difficult not to be impressed by these powerhouses of athletes - years of dedicated training fulfilling their craft - as they scrum, charge and tackle to the cheers of their fans. There’s an electric atmosphere throughout the crowd of thousands all gathered for the leisure, love and dedication to the game.&nbsp;

This Saturday the mighty Connacht men take on Toulouse in a bid to secure a place at the Heineken Champions Cup Quarter Final.&nbsp;

Make sure to wear some green.

A One-off Live Collaborative Film &amp; Sound Performance Engage Art Studios, January 11th&nbsp;

Two artists, Atoosa Pour Hosseini and Vicky Langan, collaborate in a one-off Celluloid and Sound performance as part of the Winter Papers programme at Engage Art Studios in Association with Galway City Arts Office.

This live debut collaboration will explore the mysterious relationship between mind and materiality. Langan will be providing sounds of the amplified body coming into contact with raw material, supported by visuals on 8mm and 16mm film by Pour Hosseini.

Winter Papers is Ireland’s annual art anthology published by Curlew Editions and edited by Kevin Barry and Olivia Smith. It contains works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, photography, and visual arts, along with craft interviews and in-conversation pieces on writing, film, theatre, photography and music.&nbsp;

Kevin Barry himself, who is a multi-award winning and Booker prize-nominated author, will be the guest speaker at the event.&nbsp;

Admission is free and all are welcome.
