South Park (The Swamp)

Situated in the Claddagh area of Galway city, South Park (referred locally as ‘The Swamp’), is an excellent place to take a stroll or cycle and enjoy the views of Galway Bay, the Clare Hills, Galway City and the Harbor. There are 3 walking loops in South Park, the first is the shortest taking in half of the park, the second loop take you around the park with two options to bring you to the Westend, one bringing you back through grattan road and Claddagh Quay or the other, up Fairhill Rd which will bring you to Katies Claddagh Cottage. The third loop brings you out along the causeway to Mutton Island and back in. The pathway has two options, one for walking and one for cyclists. Its closeness to Nimmo’s Pier also allows for pleasant harbor views and numerous swans swimming about. Other features in the park include; a Gaelic playing pitch, a Rugby pitch, two Soccer pitches, a playground for the kids and several benches to relax and areas of planted flowers, shrubs and trees. During the summer there is one sand and two stone beaches, for people to enjoy the benefits of Galway Bay depending on the tide.
