In 1902 eight fishermen from the Claddagh area tragically lost their lives on Galway Bay, near the village of Kilcolgan, Co Galway. They were on their way home from a wedding across the bay when a squall capsized their boat. This stone monument with a stylized bird was erected in memory of those lives lost.
