NEW: UPDATE ON PARKING IN FERMOY 
Fermoy Forum statement re Activating County Towns (ACT) 
Currently it is our understanding that there is no ‘official’ or ‘active’ business grouping in Fermoy town. Fermoy Forum do not represent all businesses, nor do we claim to.
However, representatives of the Fermoy Forum Executive have attended weekly meetings with the 
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/CorkCoCo/?__cft__[0]=AZXHUOeJ2lFMXXB4IGFoYm7-2Z-NbSkGOr0Nf-_xqQejvZ89Ow8E6JZFnb4FqFUJQbYrVpTxEGJvw6pvBom31C9cHvLnBm-Ibs8b7WBSOw1BkElU2wVfgBphxsgmwjjMyi82Jb7tAfeDnJZiLhEfEqWh2FagxqY_q25w_rIlwpVz3w&__tn__=kK-R" target="_self">Cork County Council</a>(CCC) which included both the executive and elected councillors, and this makes up the Town Team which is tasked with reactivating Fermoy while implementing social distance guidelines on account on the Covid 19 pandemic. We had our first meeting on the 18th of May 2020. 
We are aware of changes which are being made to traffic flows, parking, removal of parking spaces and enforcement by CCC

The main changes are as follows-

1. Removal of car parking spaces- replaced with bollards in the following town centre areas:

• Seven public car park spaces from Dealz to Vodafone on Patrick St 
• Three spaces outside The Health Food and Phone Repair shop Patrick St.
• Removal of three spaces on Newmarket St outside Shoe Repair shop.

2. Marking pedestrian flows on foot paths.

3. Marking footpaths at bus stops to ensure proper queuing in a safe manner. (subject to review- additional bus stops are to be confirmed)

4. Minor changes to parking on Pearse Sq. No effect on the number of spaces.

5. CCC have written to residents within the town centre asking them to move their cars to car parks between 10am and 5pm. 

6. Car parks will now be free, beginning on June 29th until the end of 2020- subject to extension.
7. Full enforcement of traffic bye laws. On this point CCC want all employers to encourage employees to park in Car Parks but to leave spaces closest to town centre to customers.

8. New Taxi rank to be shortly installed on Newmarket Street. Existing Taxi rank will remain – drivers will be advised to use Newmarket Street taxi rank

All of the above are subject to review and some are only temporary measures. 
Obviously, the Fermoy Forum are not entirely happy with these changes, we always felt that any changes made need to be proportionate to their effect on doing business in Fermoy. Where we felt this was not the case we have raised the issues, concessions have been made, however, social distancing will have a dramatic effect on town planning. We will continue to work with the Council to focus on the main issue which is to make Fermoy town as safe as possible. 

Further with the implementation of these changes, the Fermoy Forum fully support the enforcement of the traffic parking bye laws. With reduced on street parking this will lead to an increased demand for car parking spaces. The Fermoy Forum supports the role of the traffic wardens who are out to maximise the rotation of available car parking spaces for the benefit of both businesses and citizens, however during this transitional period we have requested warning letters to be issued to those who may not be familiar with new parking restrictions in Fermoy. However, we cannot sympathise with repeat car parking offenders. 

Finally, we would earnestly request anyone who works in Fermoy to park their car at the top of the Library Car Park or the lower end of Mill Island Car Park. This will help those who are doing business in Fermoy with easier access to the main streets.&nbsp;
