What is Fermoy Forum?

Fermoy Forum is a voluntary organisation made up of local people that works in partnership with your local businesses, community groups and the municipal authority to develop and communicate opportunities and implement plans for the economic, social and environmental development of Fermoy town.

Why has it been established?

In order to facilitate those within the community to work together through partnership to enrich our town as a great place to work, live and do business.

What are our objectives?

Working in partnership with Fermoy Municipal Authority, the forum’s activities include strategic business planning, pro-active sectoral development, feasibility assessment and management of projects, area branding, promotion, marketing and networking, communications, and monitoring/evaluation of projects and activities.

Membership Benefits

Establishing a representative body for Fermoy’s many businesses and non-profit organisations has never been more important than at this moment. Fermoy Forum is stepping into this role and has already established a working relationship with the Cork County Council as well as our Municipal Town Council and local Councillors.

As a subscribed member of the Fermoy Forum, we will work hard to represent your views, issues, needs and aspirations as we work closely with these state agencies. By encouraging a strong, unified business community, we help to create a stable local economy that provides a high quality of life for those who live and work in Fermoy.

Recent reports indicate that Cork County Council will have a reduced budget in the coming years. What budget is left will have to be used effectively. Fermoy Forum as a collective will be in a better position to advocate for better services than individual businesses and non-profits.

Harvesting Happiness

In the heart of Europe many years ago a group of courageous students stood up against the darkness of oppression. Their bravery on november17th, 1939, marked a pivotal moment in history, leading to the establishment of international students' day commemorated worldwide, celebrates not just their sacrifice but also the vibrant diversity, resilience, and unity of students' community across the globe. 

In a quaint town student from around the world celebrate international students' day. Among them were Mia from Italy passionate about art and history and Ken from Kenya a budding software engineer. 

The day began with a shared breakfast. Mia brought homemade tiramisu and Ken shared aromatic Kenyan tea. They exchanged stories of their homelands, finding joy in their differences and similarities. As the day progressed, they joined a seminar discussing the historical significance of the day learning about the bravery of students in 1939 in Prague. This deepened their appreciation for the freedom, opportunities they enjoyed as international students. In the afternoon a cultural fair unfolded. Mia showcased a vibrant display of Italian renaissance art while Ken demonstrated a program, he had coded to translate phrases to different languages. Their peers hailing from multiple countries, contributed their unique talents and knowledge creating a rich mosaic of global culture. 

As dusk approached the students gathered for a music and dance event Mia taught Ken the tarantelle a lively Italian dance. While Ken taught Mia some traditional Kenyan dances. Music from around the world filled the air and laughter echoed through the campus. 

The day ended with a reflective moment. The students lit candles forming a circle of light symbolizing their unity and shared commitment to making the world a better place through understanding and collaboration.  

Mia and Ken along with their friends left the celebration feeling more connected than ever, not just to their own cultures but each other's international student's day had brought them closer turning classmates into a global family.  

This short story captures the essence of international students' day, a celebration of cultural diversity, historical awareness and the unifying power of education. 

Years later Mia and Ken were now successful in their own fields. Returned to the university they found their mural preserved. A symbol of a tradition that continued to thrive. Every year on international students' day new students added to the mural weaving their stories into the ever-evolving masterpiece. Mia and Ken, standing before their legacy, realized that the true impact of their journey was not in the mural itself but the unbreakable bonds and understanding it fostered among generations of students.

A Day of Unity - International Students' Day 

Have you ever wondered why some people deviate from the diet we've all been taught since childhood? It all comes down to self-introspection.

Self-introspection, often referred to as self-reflection, is the process of examining one's own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It involves deep self-examination and a conscious effort to gain insight into one's motivations, beliefs, and actions. It is well-studied and proven that self-introspection helps with:

If we stop to think about the things we do just because we were taught that way, we can discover parts of ourselves that may surprise us.

So, I'll ask you another question to make you think about yourself, why do you eat meat? Since we were children, we've been given products that come from animals, but have you really asked yourself why? Have you asked yourself the consequences that this industry has?

Today, on November 1st, for World Vegan Day, we will answer these questions.

Why do we consume products that come from animals?

In the past, it was necessary to eat what was available at the time. Over time and with the evolution of the human species, we were led to believe that this is the correct and normal thing to do. Capitalism and speciesism have made us believe that we are not a part of this industry that is gradually destroying our world.

Consequences of consuming animal products

Thousands of studies have affirmed all these consequences of this diet that we have been taught as normal. Some of these consequences are:

Environmental Impact: The meat and dairy industry is a major contributor to environmental degradation. Deforestation, habitat loss, and high greenhouse gas emissions are associated with livestock farming.

Global Food Insecurity: The inefficiency of producing meat compared to plant-based foods contributes to global food scarcity. It takes a significant amount of resources, including water and grains, to produce a small amount of meat, which could otherwise be used to feed more people with plant-based alternatives.

Animal Welfare: We have been led to believe that humans are superior to any other species, belittling and killing the others. All animals deserve to be respected, like humans, are sentient beings and unique with a nervous system to capture the emotions and situations that surround them. We do not have the right to make them be born into a world where their only purpose will be to die for human consumption.

Health Implications: Consuming animal products has been linked to various health issues, including heart disease, high cholesterol, and an increased risk of certain cancers. On the other hand, a plant-based diet has been shown to promote better health and reduce the risk of these diseases.

If you want to support this cause to respect the world in which you live, every little decision matters.

The seemingly harmless act that we all do of buying a steak has created this industry that will never stop if it continues to have customers, every unit of it purchased is more money and incentive for the company to continue producing, and the same market where you buy will continue to get these products.

In conclusion, our daily choices impact our health, the welfare of animals, and the environment. On World Vegan Day, we're reminded of our power to make compassionate and sustainable choices. Let's embrace change, question norms, and work together to create a healthier, kinder world for all.

Within the embrace of Castleblagh Woods, one finds more than just trees. Here, ancient guardians stretch high, their leaves narrating tales with every crunch beneath your feet. The air is thick with stories, redolent with the mingling of earth and the first hints of winter's chill.

Legend has it, the oldest tree in this woodland, aptly named 'Grandfather Oak', was the meeting point for lovers in the 18th century. Whispered tales speak of Áine and Liam, two souls intertwined in love, yet shackled by fate. Under this very oak, their love flourished in stolen moments, away from prying eyes and family feuds. Though destiny kept them apart, the woods remember, and if you listen closely, their laughter and sighs echo softly, carried by the winds of time.
