Windmill Lane Studios were opened in 1978 by the pioneering recording Engineer Brian Masterson. It was originally used to record traditional music from artists like Planxty and the Chieftains. U2 were the first rock band to record here. The site is a popular cult symbol for music followers, especially U2 fans. They made full and partial recordings for some of their most famous albums here including Boy, The Joshua Tree and Zooropa. Other famous artists who recorded here include Van Morrison , Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Sinead O’Connor, Elvis Costello, Kate Bush, The Waterboys and Clannad. In 1988 the studios relocated to 20 Ringsend Road. The walls of the original studio building were covered in graffiti from music fans who paid pilgrimage from all around the world, many of whom were U2 fans attracted by the studio’s connection to the band. Apart from the open gallery 3 where U2 recorded, the original studio structure was demolished by the property investment company Hibernia REIT.
