Liberty Hallwas the headquarters was the head of James Larkins Irish Transport and General Workers Union and the Irish Citizen Army along with being its birthplace. Leading up to the Easter Rising it was used to manufacture and store weapons, and plan the Easter Rising. The 1916 Proclamation was printed in Liberty Hall. Liberty Hall was the assembly point for the people who took part in the Easter Rising from the outset. During the Rising Liberty Hall was left vacant. Unaware of this, the British shelled Liberty Hall before any other stronghold. The British gun boat HMY The Helga, travelled up the Liffey and shelled Liberty Hall. The Helga fired 24 rounds of high explosive shells from its 12-pounder deck gun. Along with The Helga British Army gunners had set an 18-pounder field gun and shelled Liberty Hall. Liberty Hall received significant damage, however was not reduced to rubble. The original build was demolished in the 1950's and replaced. The current tenants are SIPTU into which the Irish Transport and General Workers Union had merged.
