Fusiliers' Arch is at the Grafton Street entrance to St Stephens Green. It was commisioned to commemorate the officers, non-commissioned officers and enlisted men of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who fought and died in the Second Boer War. Four battalions of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers fought for the British Empire, against two Boer states, the South African Republic (Republic of Transvaal) and the Orange Free State, over the Empire's influence in South Africa. The names of 222 dead Royal Dublin Fusiliers who fought are inscribed on the underside of the arch. It also lists the locatioins of the the battles the Royal Dublin Fusiliers fought. It was built in 1907 during a time of political unrest in Ireland and an ever growing Nationalist Movement. The Nationalists referred to it as "Traitors Gate" as it was a monument to the British Empire and those who served it. During the Easter Rising it was damaged by cross fire between nationalists and British Troops.
