Taoiseach and President of Ireland Eamon De Valera, Commander of the 3rd Batallion occupied Bolands Mill on the Grand Canal Dock. The main road and railway line from Dun Laoghaire ran past Bolands Mill. Boland's Mill served as the headquarters of the Volunteers in a large region of Dublin's south inner city. The British reportedly, considered the Bolands Mill forces the best-trained and best-led among the rebels of 1916. Bolands Mill was one of the last rebel garrisons to surrender to the British.
