Ballyannan Wood is a beautiful, mature, mixed woodland of close to 25 hectares. It appears as woodland on old maps as far back as the mid-17th century and is shown on the Down Survey Map 1654-1656. There are a number of bygone features, such as old stone walls and banks, stone gate pillars, ruined cottages and boathouses that are visible as you explore the wood. Some of the old cobbled carriage paths remain today with lines of lime trees standing duty at either side. Its location on the edge of the Owenacurra Estuary means that the shoreline presents an interesting habitat when the tide is out, exposing the mudflats that entice the foraging birds. This is hidden gem waiting to be explored.
