Pirates Rugby News ---- Friday Rugby under lights

Friday night rugby under lights returned to the Paddock this week, with Pirates 16s entertaining Christian Brothers College from Cork. Undefeated to date, head coach Ray Duignam anticipated a good test and he was not to be disappointed.

On a night perfect for running rugby, the whistle sounded and that is exactly what the large attending crowd got, a fantastic game of running rugby with stellar defense displays from both sides. At the end of the opening half, the scoreline read 0-0. While this reflected the separation between the sides it did not reflect the game itself, with the 30 players on the pitch giving their all in defense and attack. On numerous occasions, a try was inevitable for each team, only for some super tackles.

Into the second half, some great turnovers and phase building from both sides allowed a little more space to open up. In once such instance after no less than 5 phases, Oskar Olszewski was able to stretch his legs, not for the first time, and cross the white wash allowing Brand Joy to slot the conversion to the delight of the home crowd. CBC were certainly not down and out, and camped inside the Pirates 22 for a large period of the remaining quarter throwing everything at Pirates.

Equal to the challenge, some outstanding tackles at crucial times prevented the visitors from scoring, none more so than Matthew Perryman, Jamie McKeown and Gearoid O'Donovan. The relentless pressure paid off, with a block down from a clearing kick being gathered right on the try line to allow the game to once again draw level. With the minutes on referees' Bobby Anglim watch ticking down the home side pushed hard up to field towards the clubhouse end, again being patient and build phases. Oskar Olszewski saw some space out wide and pinned the ears back. Another try to the home side, which was to be the winning one, the final score 12-7 to Pirates.

Girls Blitz at Ballincollig

Another fantastic day out for Cobh Pirates Under 12s Girls team who played Ballincollig RFC, Clonakilty and Dolphin in a excellently organised blitz at Ballincollig RFC. Improvements being seen across the board, the girls are gaining confidence in tackling, and scoring their performances.

On Friday 4th of November, Darragh Curley trained with Springfield Ramblers on the Stephen Ireland AstroTurf from 5:30-6:30. He then attended the Munster Senior league game after that and watched Stuart O’Rourke score 2 early goals as Cobh Wanderers AFC secured another win in the Beamish Stout Munster Senior League. His uncle Ger Curley and Jack Doyle's Bar sponsored the game and were presented with the match ball by Chairman Frank Mccall.

A brilliant team performance and an outstanding individual display from Stuart O' Rourke gave Wanderers a priceless win and three points from their first outing on the Stephen Ireland astroturf in Old Church Park on Friday night. Stuart grabbed two early goals and spent the rest of his 87 minutes on the pitch running the Avondale backline ragged as they tried to contain a player at the top of his game.

Three goals in the first ten minutes suggested a goal-fest but the scoring ended there and despite Wanderers creating numerous chances after that, the result remained in doubt right to the end. Wanderers started the game at a frantic pace and drove at Avondale from the first whistle. They were rewarded with the two goals from O' Rourke but a defensive lapse allowed Avondale to pull one back on 10 minutes.

Brendán Frahill and captain Gary Collins were faultless at the back, in front of Shane Hallahan, and both had great chances to add to the scoreline at the other end also. Eoin Hastings and Peter Nolan were solid in defense and dangerous going forward. Michael O' Rourke, Mikey Foley and Ross McCarthy linked really well in midfield and set up lots of opportunities for George Keating and Alan O' Flynn to attack down the flanks and create chances for the outstanding player on the pitch on the night; Stuart O' Rourke.

All the subs did their bit to ensure Wanderers held their slim lead to the end of injury time and grab a memorable win. Well done to Davin, Pat, Niall Pat Mc, Kevin and all the squad on a great game.

Cobh Wanderers Juniors

The Junior team made it a hat-trick of victories over the weekend as they won on penalties in the 3rd round of the FAI junior cup against U.C.C. on the Stephen Ireland astroturf in Old Church Park yesterday evening. The game finished 3-3 with familiar goal scorers in Niall Abbott from the penalty spot and another double from Jamie Gilmartin. Eoin Cullimore was the hero in the penalty shoot-out with the save that gave Wanderers a 5-4 win.

Unlucky for U14s who bowed out of the National Cup today away to Lakewood. Unfortunately, Hugh Kennedy suffered what looked like a serious injury. The club, and U14 team and coaches, wish Hugh a speedy recovery.

In the National Cup on the superb Cobh 4 Football all-weather pitch. Result 4-2 with Shay, Quinn, Jamie Maher and ronin on the score sheet.

Girls U12 B Match Result

Springfield Ramblers u12B had a great come back today to get a well earned 2-2 draw. Scorers Lily Baumann and Bláithín O Rourke. Ref declared both keepers, player of the match.

U14 Division 6

Carraigaline 1-2 Springfield, brilliant result on the road today, our first of the season against high flying carraigaline, goals from Cian and Habeeb, great overall win, great effort from the whole squad, and thanks to Sam and Liam for playing up with us.

Girls U12 Match Report

Fantastic win against a strong Blarney. Some amazing saves displayed from Cliona McCarthy during the game. Goal scorers include Clara Nash, Sarah Drumgoole, Amy Nash, Jess Whelam and Lilly O’Leary. A huge thanks to Heather and Maggie Sillett for their help today with the girls. Well done girls.

U 15 National Cup Kinsale 2 Springfield Ramblers 5

A hard-fought win for our U15s in very tough conditions away against Kinsale this morning. Two goals from Kai O’ Neill and a hat trick from Alex Lawlor were enough to see us through to the next round of the National Cup. Well done boys.

U15B Girls Result

Kinsale 3-1 Springfield Ramblers A really good game to watch, Ramblers went into halftime 1-0 up thanks to a great goal from Zoe Tsebedu. In the second half, with wind against us, Kinsale put in a strong performance scoring 3 goals. Unfortunately not Springfield Ramblers day. A great performance by all girls on the day. Players to watch - Isabelle Awan & Zoe Murphy.

U13 National Cup

Mayfield 0, Springfield Ramblers 5. A good win for our 13s in the National Cup away against Mayfield this morning. Goals were scored by Alex Barrett, Will O’ Keeffe, Max Meade, Kyle O’ Callaghan and Tomi Fawole. Best on the day were Roan Fallon, Alex Barrett, Adam Barrett Wallace and Rory O’ Sullivan. Stand out moment was a superb individual goal from Tomi Fawole. Take a bow son!

Athletics

Congratulations to Ava Chandler and Sarah Drumgoole who won Munster Medals at the Munster B X country Castlelyons on Sunday, Sarah finished 7th individual under 11 while Ava was 4th in the under 15 event.

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

For Ballymore Cobh AC, Sunday's Munster Juvenile "B" Cross Country Championships in Castlelyons fulfilled both these statements. This event was open to all who had previously not medalled at Munster or national level. We came away with a 4th place finish courtesy of Ava and a 7th place finish care of Sarah, but let us rewind to the start. We departed Cobh with the flag and first aid bag and lucky we had both. We traversed the back roads, by-roads and dual cabbageways and found our way to the wilds of Castlelyons. The grass was long, coarse and sharp, the ground underneath uneven - ah sure, perfect. The weather gods were smiling as there was no wind or rain and it was unseasonably warm for November. Layers of clothing were shed and the factor 50 even made an appearance. First racer up for Ballymore Cobh AC was the sublime Sarah in the U/11s. After a few weeks of being unwell, this lady absolutely shone. She lined up in a throng, over 145-strong, of similar aged girls and went from the gun. She ran with her usual grit and determination backed by her speed and talent and finished in 7th place. Her first Munster medal made her parents so proud and her coach cry. So started the best of times.Dáire and James were next to race. With the start line crowded in this U/13s contest - 70 boys in total - the jostling began about 10 minutes before the start gun. These guys were eager to get going and the chaotic start proved to be a disaster for us. The gun went and both Dáire and James took off. Dáire got away clear but James was not so lucky. An errant set of spikes carved a chunk out of his calf muscle. But with the adrenaline coursing through his veins it was only at the finish line that he stopped and examined it and was carted into the ambulance. Lesser characters would have quit, lay down or cried. This young champion kept going, finishing being his only goal. But his leg needs stitches. Dáire had a great race as always and kicked hard for the line passing several in the finishing straight. Consistent training and hard work have certainly paid dividends for this racer. Next up over the bloodied battlefield was the girl trio of Ava, Aisling and Caoimhe in the U/13s. Ava had a magnificent race and finished 4th overall in a massive field - a place that earned her a spot on the Cork representative team for the upcoming National XC Championships. Aisling and Caoimhe finished in the pack after both putting in sterling efforts, acquitting themselves amazingly well. These girls are just getting better and stronger and surely will be brilliant seniors. These 6 Ballymore Cobh athletes have spent each Sunday for the past few months racing and it shows in their performance. They have shown what hard work gets you. They turn up. They warm up. They race. They finish. The support they give each other throughout is a lesson in team spirit. Each one feels pride if another wins a medal. They hurt when one of them gets hurt. They feel bad if another is disappointed in their own performance. So wherever you are reading this, stand up and clap for these athletes. They did us proud on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the somewhat more urbane surroundings of the MTU track and it's environs, Terry Murphy emerged from that rock he's been hiding under these last 2 years and took on the Cork Sports Partnership Rebel Run 5k.He kicked his previous best into touch with a really impressive time of 19:27. 16th place from 169 finishers and 1st place in the M/50 category showed us where this guy is at as he enters the twilight of his life! Pacing her run to near-perfection in the 10k event was the great clubwoman, Helen Hayes herself. Putting it in where it hurts on a consistent basis at our Tuesday night Aoife Cooke-ran track sessions, Helen's efforts paid off handsomely with a very respectable 16th place finish in the F/50 category amongst the 260 souls who took this classic distance on. Very well done to both of the above athletes. Adult Training sessions continue on Tuesday evenings from our clubhouse at 19:00. Anyone interested, just come along, you'll be assured of a very warm welcome. Cubs (age 7-10) and Tigers (age 11-17) training takes place Mondays and Wednesdays at various times. Engaging with the Community

What a week with young people engaging to love where we live. On Sunday, the Cobh junior parkrun was on and participants took to the track to litter pick beforehand. TY students from Colaiste Muire Cobh litter picked the area around their school during the week. The Beavers in Cobh Sea Scouts did a beach clean at Cuskinny on their hike.

Only for the Volunteers what would our Communities and shorelines be like?

They may not get to COP26 in Glasgow but at least Cleancoast Cobh are 'walking the walk' and not just 'talking the talk' about climate change. Action, it is said, is the magic word! The recent very high tides washed up a huge amount of plastics, cans, paper, bottles etc on our coastlines and great work was carried out clearing this debris today on Carrigaloe Strand by the Cleancoast Cobh team.

Disgraceful behaviour

Such a dreadful sight of garden rubbish dumped on the historic, unique and millions of years old limestone rock formation on Ballybrassil Strand. Local residents are constantly picking up rubbish here, tend to the flower containers and surrounding area, and now this again. The Marine Geology Dept of UCC are due to come on a field trip in the near future,which was cancelled last year due to COVID19,and this particular rock formation is of special interest to them. Such a shame to see a historic area treated like this.

What Next? Arts and Ageing Workshops and Clinics

How do arts organisations connect with older people? In 2019, the Creative Enquiry – Arts and Older People initiative consisted of three residencies and engagement projects involving four artists hosted by three organisations: Cork Midsummer Festival with Marie Brett; MusicAlive with Helga Deasy and Susan McManamon; and SIRIUS with Colette Lewis.

After two years, these partners are coming together to share their learnings through the ‘What Next? Arts and Ageing’ programme, which includes a Podcast series, workshops and clinics, and an e-publication. The workshops and clinics offer an opportunity to discuss and reflect with artists, programmers, curators, and local authority arts officers regarding how to meaningfully engage with communities through the arts.

What Are the Ethics of Engaging with Communities? 11 November, 10am–12pm; Zoom

Miguel Amado, director of SIRIUS, delivers a workshop with artist Colette Lewis. Colette explored ways of collaborating with older people that are accessible and innovative, considering the specificities of operating within a regional context. Rather than emphasising final outcomes, she initiated relationships for the future.

Miguel and Colette discuss the role of the arts in society: How might an arts organisations maintain links with participants after a project is ‘complete’? They provide guidance on the ethical imperative that an arts organisation should have today, particularly when working with older people, and how that might contribute to discussions of wider societal matters.

Deceased members Remembered

On Friday, November the 5th serving and retired members of the Naval Service came together for the Deceased Members Commemoration on the Naval Base. This is an important day for our veterans association, our personnel and the families of those gone before us.
