<h3>PIRATES TOPS</h3>

Pirates 18.5s welcomed Ennis Rugby Club to the Paddock for the final game in the group stage of the pan Munster Cup competition. A lot was at stake for both teams, as the winner would enjoy automatic qualification into the knock out stages while the runner up would face the playoffs for one of the final knock-out spots.&nbsp;
Pirates started the game with the sun at their backs, and a wind advantage playing towards the Newtown end. Shortly after the kickoff, Pirates openside Ben Murphy carried the ball at the Banner men, with captain Aaron Quirke in support. Quirke took the offload to start a super solo run, crossing the line near the posts for the game's opening try with only minutes gone on the clock. Adam Lynch added the 2 points from the boot.&nbsp;
Pirates maintained the pressure, and a resulting line out within 10 meters of the visitors try line saw a clean catch and resulting maul. Pirates drove over the line in the corner and after the whistle sounded it was Eoghan Doyle who stood with the ball in hand to claim Pirates 2nd try of the day, much to the delight of club President Dave “Doocey” Doyle.
The strengthening wind was playing havoc with the conversion, and even after the ball was dislodged from the tee Lynch was calm, placed the ball and with a single step slotted over the additional 2 points. Ennis, as expected, were not to stand down and launched several attacks, one of which saw Pirates 8 Sean Edogbo cover huge ground to make the all-important tackle on our 22 after the Ennis winger made 40 meters.&nbsp;
Ennis were to maintain the pressure for the next 10 minutes, camped inside the Pirates 5-meter line for no small portion. Not happy with his try, Doyle was first to one of the attacks making an important turnover. Inside centre Jack Worrall inflicted another steal in the contact area, the resulting penalty allowed Pirates to clear their lines with 30 minutes on the clock.
The fresh legs of newly introduced Cillian Allen were proving to be a menace, in the tackle and breakdown. One such turnover allowed the Pirates to put width on the ball, only the sideline being the last defender and stopping Dylan Corcoran from crossing in the corner. Half time saw the score line remain 14-0 in favour of Pirates.&nbsp;
The 2nd half was always going to be more of a defensive game, with the sun in their eyes and wind in their face, and this was evident on the scoreboard after 5 minutes, with Ennis getting their first score of the game in the form of a penalty after a deemed offside infringement. For the next 20 minutes Ennis threw everything at the Pirates defense, but from 1 to 15 the home side stood tall.&nbsp;
On the 28th minute, Pirates were in one of the rare visits to the Ennis 22. Quirke received the ball from a breakdown courtesy of scrum-half Mark O’Rourke and flirted with the defence before feeding Worrall on a run against the opposing advance. With some work to do, Jack crossed over for Pirates 3rd try bringing the tally to 19 points.&nbsp;
From the restart, Ennis was not giving up, and a try at the gate corner gave them due return from an attacking barrage. Soon after the same corner was the focus for another attack, Dylan Corcoran and Rían McGrath making the crucial tackles to halt the advance just short of the whitewash.&nbsp;

As the clock ticked down, Donnagh McNamara received a pop pass to launch an attack up the fringe, only to come undone by the touch line.&nbsp;
As the final whistle sounded, the final group positioning was decided and Pirates finish joint 1st with Abbeyfeale, and advance to the knock out stages.&nbsp;

Our 10s were one of the few minis fixtures to go ahead on Saturday, and it has been a great morning's fun in Cork Constitution RC.

Looking forward to seeing this flag flying in the singing section at St. Colman's Park this season, Thanks to Tony and the lads at Cobh Ramblers for requesting to use my drawing. The first game of the season is this Friday night v Wexford.

Saturday last was one of those bittersweet days which has us loving and hating our sport in equal measures. Huge pride in the performance of the team was accompanied by the huge disappointment in losing the game.&nbsp;
Knowing that the game could have gone our way with a little bit of luck doesn’t make defeat any easier to take but to travel to Dublin and push Dublin Lions to overtime and a loss by two points shows the strength of character of the girls. Losing three players to foul trouble tested the depth of our squad and to be fair they passed this test.&nbsp;
Having left Cobh at 7:30 am, the girls needed a good warm-up and once this was over, we were quick out of the blocks. Orlaith Finn was unlucky with a jump shot but baskets by Mia Tarrant, Amy Duggan, Zara Smith and Eimear Diggin gave us a great start and Cobh lead 15-10 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was much closer but we still had a 26-22 lead at the break. Baskets from Amy, Zara and Anna Ring kept us in charge at halftime. With two players in foul trouble, the third quarter was always going to be challenging and Lions got on top early in this quarter. A three-pointer from Eimear helped steady the ship but a 20-11 quarter to Lions saw them establish a 42-37 lead at the end of the third.
The last quarter saw the girls mount a great comeback. Baskets by Lucy O’Shea, Jane Palmer were followed by scores from Mia, Amy and Zara to bring us within sight of the finishing line but a huge three-pointer from the Lions ensured that the game was tied 51-51 at the end of regulation time. A harsh call in overtime saw us lose a third player and despite the best efforts of the girls, we couldn’t quite get over the line. The final score was 59-57 to Dublin Lions.&nbsp;
Well done to Dublin Lions on their victory and best of luck in the semi final. A big thanks to all our supporters who made loads of noise in support of the girls. Thanks to Ruth, Aisling, Gwynne, Nigel, Tony, Michelle, Sonya, Leah, Ailish, Joe, Audrey and Lucy for keeping the girls going. A couple of parents weren’t able to travel but were kept up to date by our WhatsApp updates.&nbsp;

Well done to Catherine who ran her 100th parkrun today at Cobh junior parkrun. Catherine and her family are very much part of the parkrun family in Cobh. They volunteer every week with us helping to set up and clean up the track before use. We are immensely proud of Catherine and her family and hope she continues running with us every week.
