PIRATES
Pirates 16s welcomed Kinsale Rfc to the Paddocks to renew their Pan Munster Cup campaign. Kinsale have been going very well thus far this season, so a close encounter was anticipated, and that's exactly what was witnessed in the Paddock.&nbsp;
Kinsale began the game in a fashion they continued throughout, using their hands to move the ball across the advancing backline. Pirates were equal to the defensive ask, and a pick and go from an early scrum from Adam Dolan allowed the 8 to stretch his legs, and the visiting defense releasing the supporting Odhran Burke to cross in the Newtown corner for the opening score and try. Soon after the restart Ewen Lynch spotted the missing pillar in the Kinsale defense and took a ball from the ruck to gain 20 meters before being stopped on the visitors 5 meter line. Kinsale cleared their lines and visited the Pirates 22 on the club house end for the first time. Getting some go forward ball and phases going, the visitors used some great hands to spread the ball allowing their winger to touch down in the clubhouse corner, with the conversion being very unlucky to strike the upright. Both teams level again at the half way point in the opening half. Soon after the restart, Pirates attacked the Newtown corner after a sequence of carries from Evan, Wellham, Jamie McKeown and Kieran Hurley with some quick feeds from "son of Conker" Odhran Burke. Quick hands back against the following defense saw Oskar Olszewski under the post to give Brandon Joy a straight forward conversion, 12-5 to the home side. Kinsale came straight back at Pirates from the restart in similar Pirates, the home defense again equal to the task and clearing their lines from a resulting penalty. The remainder of the opening half was played in the middle 40 meters of the Paddock, with Pirates wingers ODonovan and Abramson carrying and defending admirably. The second half saw some errors from both sides, to be expected after the extended Christmas break, Pirates attacking after 10 minutes only for a chip through by Brandon Joy went dead ahead of the advancing Gearoid ODonovan. With both teams now opting for a more confrontational attacking option Pirates 12 Matthew Perryman made 3 crucial tackles in as many minutes to halt the visitors progress. Like any tight 5, the Pirates front and back row were standing tall in forward and reverse, keeping play in the area of the half way line. With 25 minutes gone on the clock Kinsale began to build phases and move the ball wider, spending 5 minutes pummeling the Pirates 22 meter line. A relieving kick by Joy was knocked on by Kinsale, bringing a home scrum just inside the Kinsale half way line.. Pirates back row combined well to retain possession with the clock ticking down. A break away by Kinsale saw a massive tackle by Jamie McKeown, halting what could have been a major attacking up the flank. Some fantastic counter rucking by Pirates Liam Corcoran, Keelan Manley and Kieran Hurley gave Pirates a penalty in front of the posts some 30m out, which Joy took full advantage of, bring the scoreline to 15-5 and importantly putting Pirates more than a score ahead. With the game now in stoppage time, locks Ewen Lynch and Cian Kidney worked like men possessed to keep play in the centre of the Paddock and out of Pirates red zone. A final attack down the flank saw Oskar and Matthew combine to halt play in the Newtown corner, in doing do bringing the game to an end. The boys will now regroup this week and prepare for the visit of Kilrush Rugby Club to the Paddocks next week
