Cobh Girls back on track

After the heartbreak in Dublin on Saturday after being edged out in overtime in the National cup basketball under 18, the girls were back on court at colaiste Mhuire on Monday evening. The opposition was Carrigaline and from an early stage the Cobh girls were dominant and ran out deserving victors on a score line of 69-22. A feature of the game was the introduction of 2 of the older girls sisters, who showed great promise for their tender years Leah Duggan sister of Amy and Sally Palmer sister of Jane. It was my first basketball fixture attending for 2 years and after returning from 5 weeks in the USA it was great to see, things nearly back to normal. The other observation was the fact how tall the girls have got, not having seen most of them for 2 years. I am certain that a brilliant future awaits them. Basketball's gain is other sports loss. But it's brilliant to see the older girls keeping up their sport. Many of them had trained with me in club and schools football and the one thing I missed most during the past 2 years was not being able to help with the training programme particularly in primary schools.

Litter Louts How miserable do you have to be to dump in the most picturesque parts of our island?

After a clean up by locals only a few weeks ago more dumped again down in East Ferry. The black bags of garden debris also and tyres thrown over ditch. All reported to our litter warden and thanks to Cork Co Co for collecting. A full bag gathered of plastic washed up on the shore there too. Thanks to Ballymore Community Association.

Please report any illegal dumping.

Wanderers over 35 victory Monday night.

Great performance by the over 35's in the preliminary round of the shield with an impressive 4-2 victory over Crofton Celtic on the Mayfield Utd. Astro tonight. Barrie Hastings opened the scoring with a cracking header at the far post before some great interplay involving Chris Courtney allowed Jason McGroarty to slot home the second for Wanderers. Courtney bagged the third with a sweet left foot strike from outside the box that curled into the bottom corner of the net despite the keeper getting a hand to it. The game looked over with a 3-0 half time score but Crofton pulled one back early in the second half and it was game on again. Courtney played a superb ball through to McGroarty who bundled it past the keeper and finish to an empty net to restore the three goal advantage. Crofton scored from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game to give a final score of 4-2. Well done to all involved tonight.
