Art and Politics with Gregory Sholette

The SIRIUS Summer School, produced by SIRIUS in Cobh, County Cork, examines the relationship between art and politics. Gregory Sholette conducts the inaugural edition of the SIRIUS Summer School. He considers the processes and urgencies that have facilitated the appearance of both activism by artists and activist forms of art. Sholette leads participants in exploring the political role that artists play today, including in such groups as Black Lives Matter and Liberate Tate, and over the past several decades. Sholette, other contributors, and participants unpack such themes as protest aesthetics, historical and market invisibility, and exploitative creative labour via a body of scholarly work, which ranges from Sholette’s classical notions of artistic ‘dark matter’ and ‘bare art’ to new concepts such as the ‘unpresent’, as well as perspectives on decolonisation and ‘deviant’ curating. The sessions evolve through theoretical and methodological debates in the form of presentations, group readings and discussions, and self-inquiry.

Led by Gregory Sholette

Organised by Miguel Amado, director of SIRIUS

Co-delivered by Miguel Amado, Carlos Garrido Castellano and Georgia Perkins

Dr Gregory Sholette is an artist, writer, educator, and activist based in New York City. His forthcoming book, The Art of Activism and the Activism of Art, joins Dark Matter, Delirium and Resistance, and Art as Social Action (with Chloë Bass) to focus on issues of activist art, collective cultural labour, and counter-historical representation. As a professor at Queens College, co-directs ‘Social Practice CUNY’ with Chloë at the Graduate Center, City University New York.
