We were delighted to be invited to greet the Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Danny Collins today when he paid his first official visit to Cobh on the invitation of Cobh Harbour Chamber . We had recently had the pleasure of meeting him at the launch of Culture Night at County Hall.

BREAKING THE SILENCE

We would like to thank Wioletta Franiel-Bocheńska and all the staff at our local Lidl store here in Cobh for their very generous donation once again this year for our golf Classic which takes place FRIDAY

This is the second year Lidl have come on board with us to ensure all the golfers have plenty of water and snacks to keep the hunger away . 😋 😋 😋

As always it is very much appreciated ❤

Marie Brett’s exhibition The Hidden Mountain, the Fort and the Five Trees features works, including a commissioned, newly made installation, that consider social, psychological, allegorical, and mystical methods of processing trauma, conflict, and control.

We invited the writer Emma Dwyer to respond to the exhibition, focusing on one of the accompanying events. We are reproducing excerpts of this commissioned essay.

Don’t Drink the Water Emma Dwyer

“It’s mad how the sea swimming really took off, isn’t it?” I overheard a woman saying this on Sandycove beach recently. I thought to myself: what’s mad is how sea swimming became a badge of honour, something to be shared on social media. Sandycove is where I grew up; we spent a lot of our childhood in or on the water. During lockdowns, I observed from a distance people flocking to the popular swimming spot through Instagram posts, with many, many people sharing their daily ritual of dipping their bodies in the water. Communing on the rock, queuing up to get in, bobbing away in the Irish sea, queuing up to get out. And then, most importantly, donning a dry robe, taking a selfie and sharing it.

The first time I spoke to Marie Brett about her exhibition at SIRIUS in Cobh – a coastal town severely lacking in sea swimming spots – we talked about this rise in popularity in sea swimming during lockdowns, the return to the elements, to ritual and to a place of healing: bodies of water. Her exhibition, ‘The Hidden Mountain, the Fort and the Five Trees,’ takes over the three galleries at SIRIUS periodically from March to October 2022, with a series of films, a documentation room, and a new installation. Thematically, the exhibition spans Marie’s recent and past career, so there are many threads that can be pulled; from questions about the ethics of care and human trafficking to themes of ritual, the supernatural, and transformation.
