<h3>&nbsp;A month on after the devastating loss of our Club Secretary, Orla Flavin, we the committee of Cobh Lions would like to share an appreciation of Orla.&nbsp;</h3>

Orla Flavin (nee Quirke) RIP an Appreciation 
Thursday the 5th of May 2012 Orla walked into the life of Cobh Lions Club, the previous month she had been volunteering at the one hundredth anniversary remembrances of the sinking of the Titanic. There she had met Cobh Lions Club member Johanna Fitzpatrick and expressed an interest in getting involved in some form of community group, Johanna did not need any prompting and Orla was quickly recruited into Cobh Lions. Orla quickly endeared herself to all members, we could see that here was a unique young woman, full of life, energy, ideas, and a welcome asset to any club. In a very short time we got to know Orla as the warm, loyal, compassionate, engaging, thoughtful person that she was, she was a big personality with a big heart. She always had a good word to say, she was always there to help others. Cobh Lions Club was a better place with Orla as a member, over the next ten years she was involved in and led many of our projects. With Orla involved it was a case of doing what she asked of you, she had a way of getting people to step out of their comfort zone and do what she wanted you to do, and despite your reservations you enjoyed it. While of course Orla was invaluable to us in Cobh Lions she was also very involved in Loins Clubs Ireland, in particular District 133 where she served as Cobh Lions long term secretary and was also Zone Chairperson for many years. Last year she took on the extra role of coordinator of the Global Service District Team. This year she was extremely proud to have been appointed to the role of District Treasurer. Orla was very open with her Lions family and took us into her confidence early in her illness, she fought the brave fight, with courage and dignity. We will miss our friend and Lions leader. It would be foolish to try to replace her, but we will continue on with her memory strong in our hearts. Orla’s contribution to Cobh Lions Club will not fade, but will be continued on, in everything we do, we were the lucky ones, the ones who knew and spent time with that wonderful lady Orla Flavin (nee Quirke). Our most heartfelt condolences to her husband Neil, her treasures Hailie and Chloe, to her family, and indeed to a very large circle of friends. ‘And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. <h3>Last Man Standing. Who is still standing?</h3>

This week saw week two of the last man standing competition with six players eliminated, leaving seven still standing. Last man standing will take a break for one week as next week's competition is the Dairy &amp; Engineering Champagne Scramble, which is an open three-ball scramble (Sat and Sun), Friday is open singles), so no individual cards can be entered on the V1 club system for Sat / Sun. This competition will return the following week, 20/21/22 Oct. Keep practicing those par threes. It was brilliant to see all the runners at Cobh junior parkrun today taking the 2 km course on in their stride. The weather was absolutely miserable and each and everyone of them warmed up and ran a completed the parkrun. Well done to you all and also to the parents who bring them every week.

Our Under 13 girls got their league season off to a start with a visit to the Parochial Hall, where they took on Brunell. For many of the team, it was their first game of competitive basketball as we didn’t have an under 12 team last year. Faye Murphy had an excellent first quarter, scoring 10 of her overall 17 points. With Naoise Ryan adding 4 points, Cobh lead 14–9 at the end of the first quarter. Brunell had the better of the second quarter but baskets from Favour Pedro and Isabelle Geary had Cobh in front at halftime on a scoreline of 22–20. With the game in the balance, Brunell upped the tempo in the third quarter and by the end of the quarter had established a lead of 33-26. A basket by Naoise Ryan and 2 free throws by Rachel Hastings Gilley kept Cobh in the game. Brunell continued to press home their advantage in the fourth quarter and maintained their lead. Further baskets by Faye, Naoise and Caoimhe Hamilton meant that Cobh were always in the game and they battled hard all the way to the final whistle. While Brunell deserved their 51-37 win, it was an excellent performance by the Cobh girls and they can look forward to the season with confidence. Our Under 15 girls, having won away to Ballincollig, had their first home game of the season against Father Mathews. Both teams lacked intensity at the start of the game and both coaches took early time outs to get their teams organised. Cobh responded to their time out with a flurry of baskets lead by Francesca Kyamagero and Lucy Walsh. 29 second quarter points extended the Cobh lead. Baskets from Francesca, Lucy, Isabelle Bardsley and Emily Ring gave Cobh a commanding lead and Fr Mathews a mountain to climb at half-time. There was to be no respite for Fr Mathews in the second half as Cobh continued their dominance. Seven points from Sonia Balanzin were added to by Lucy Sheridan on the fast break. Ella O’Brien chipped in with a nice finish. Bianka Bulkowska had a couple of nice baskets for Fr Mathews in the last quarter. Further baskets by Maja Lukasiewicz, Kate McCarthy and Cliodhna Bradley ensured that Mathews battled to the end of the game. In truth, Fr Mathews had no answer to the scoring power of Francesca and Lucy Walsh who put in super displays for the home side. Strimming, mowing, weeding and roadside litter picking was carried out yesterday by our regular community volunteers and what a most fabulous October day for a clean up. A huge thank you also to each and every one of our lovely residents for maintaining outside their own areas so beautifully.All over Ballymore and environs is looking absolutely fabulous. Preparations underway for Winter planting also and will take place in a early November.With sincere gratitude to Bert,Mary,Gary.Ciara,Brian,Esther, Alan,Lyndsey, Stevie,Catherine, Finbar, Helen,Monica and Dave for maintaining our community sites all year around and to Yvonne,Eileen and Jim on taking good care of our very precious heritage water pumps.Well done to you all.
